Totally noob, but wants root and custom ROM to HTC Hero

Hi lads!

I'm new to this, but since my HTC Hero has been lagging a little bit, and my program "messages" is hanging and badword up all the time, i want to root my phone and install a custom ROM for it. I want it to be faster, and more precisly. Tho, i am a totally noob, so if someone here could give me a "step by step" way, to to this without mistakes, i would've been really happy. I know the update to 2.1 soon will be ready, but i want to check this out before its released.

Again, the phone i got is HTC Hero, and it is the european version

what about that downgrade? The phone is living on the original 1.5 ROM. But it's the latest version. Is any downgrade of the ROM neccesary before rooting?
