Guest Azurren Posted March 4, 2010 Report Posted March 4, 2010 (edited) Okay, I've read that the Pulse battery life is one of the worst features on the pulse, but how long can we expect it to last? I'm not looking for 100% accurate responses, just general feedback from people who have been using their Pulses for a while. How long will it last as a phone? (All data sync turned off, minimal use) How long will it last in general? (General use, Wifi / 3g on for sync) How long will it last as an MP3 player? How long will it last as an Online radio player? How long will it last for a general user? (Wifi / 3g for sync, phone calls and some internet browsing / Video streaming) How long will it last with heavy usage? (Streaming Video, Web browsing) I know I have asked alot of questions and I will try and answer them myself in time.. Just I have only just got my pulse and it's a novelty atm (So I'm picking it up every hour or so and having a play) Thanks (Oh and just a quick unrelated question, what uses more power? Wifi or 3g?) Guest flip360 Posted March 4, 2010 Report Posted March 4, 2010 mine lasts for 3 days with minimal usage, and i think it will last for a day with heavy usage (mp3, wifi, 3g) but i am not using them often, so mine is ranging from 1 to 3 days :( cheers
Guest Nirva Posted March 4, 2010 Report Posted March 4, 2010 Mine lasts for 6-7 days with minimal usage. I also use the application setCPU to make sure that my CPU is running at 122 Mhz while in sleep. With normal usage ( +- 1 hour of surfing / day ), I expect it to last 2-4 days. I haven't tested the MP3 player very much, but from what I have seen, it doesn't battery life too much. Maybe this is because of setCPU ( cause while listening to music, the phone might be in sleep mode ).
Guest flip360 Posted March 6, 2010 Report Posted March 6, 2010 6-7 days? come on, i think that mine prediction of 3 days is much but yours is off the chart. Either this or your phone sleeps all 6-7 days <_<

Either this or your phone sleeps all 6-7 days <_< I agree, my estimation was to high. I was running 4 days, and had still a lot of battery when I wrote that comment. But I achieved 5 days without reloading. My phone is not always in sleep. I send quite a lot of SMS'es, but don't make a lot of phone calls ( not even 1/day ) and surf +- 20 minutes a day. Using Vanilla Rom 1.8
Guest masterpfa Posted March 6, 2010 Report Posted March 6, 2010 6-7 days? come on, i think that mine prediction of 3 days is much but yours is off the chart. Either this or your phone sleeps all 6-7 days  :( So I guess you don't want to hear about my 24hrs then, OK just got the phone, been modding etc. <_< I have Wi-Fi on 24/7 (working from home this week) But I use the following which hopefully over the next few days will give more realistic results 1.SetCPU, Set to 128MHz when asleep 2.Autokiller app and 3.Y5 so I expect once I stop playing with it I should get around 2-3 days (Running MCR 1.8 Beta Vanilla)
Guest david_dawkins Posted March 6, 2010 Report Posted March 6, 2010 I have to charge mine every day, and I don't have bluetooth on, or GPS. Wifi on in the evenings, no calls in the day. Compared to my Blackberry 8310, it stinks battery-wise. But hey, I love the phone in every other respect, and I wouldn't go back to the Blackberry.
Guest Azurren Posted March 6, 2010 Report Posted March 6, 2010 Thanks. After turning 3g off and not using ebuddy 24/7 my pulse is lasting a day (Which is all I really wanted to be honest) I was getting worried with it only lasting half a day <_<
Guest zenchan Posted March 7, 2010 Report Posted March 7, 2010 My average daily use would be about an hour of 3G web-browsing, 10-15 texts and perhaps a five minute call. I tend to charge it every second day, though could probably stretch it to every third day with the battery level getting really low.
Guest masterpfa Posted March 7, 2010 Report Posted March 7, 2010 No joy battery life down to 12hrs now, going to try a few more things like disabling Panda Home etc. <_<
Guest 205er Posted March 8, 2010 Report Posted March 8, 2010 When I use my phone I have to recharge after one day. With just a little use, the battery lasts 2 days.
Guest meinnit Posted March 8, 2010 Report Posted March 8, 2010 I get about 1.5 days from the following usage with 3G enabled: -Approx 2hrs calling a day -20 texts -Approx 20-30 minutes of browsing or app usage I have found that 'Data Synchronization -> Background Data' and 'Security & location -> Use wireless networks' options are the biggest battery killers. The first is probably due to unnecessary polling and the second is the fact that it sends statistics to Google every so often.
Guest freexe Posted March 8, 2010 Report Posted March 8, 2010 I think mine has a bug in it, it lasts for about 1/2 day if I use it at all and never more than a day if I don't touch it, and in the battery history it always has "100% running" unless I reboot it 2-3 times then randomly it goes down to 25% running. If I listen to mp3s or play games, then it lasts about 3 hours tops. Running 1.8, wifi off but 3g on. If I turn off 3g it lasts about 2x the time but the phone is no fun. I'm waiting for the 2.1 update and plan on taking it back it it doesn't fix itself.
Guest peter_c Posted March 8, 2010 Report Posted March 8, 2010 With very minimal use I'd get about two days out of mine before recharging. Anything like games, MP3, or GPS really eats it up though. What's puzzling me is that now and again the charge will drop like crazy with no obvious cause. It'll be 90% one minute, then when I next check about an hour or so later it'll have dropped to 40% without even being used?
Guest bounty123 Posted March 8, 2010 Report Posted March 8, 2010 (edited) 6-7 days? come on, i think that mine prediction of 3 days is much but yours is off the chart. Either this or your phone sleeps all 6-7 days <_< 6-7 days is right with minimal usage, I can second that. I have 3G, GPS, WIFI off. Minimal background widgets and services. For example I found that the battery widget used up lots of battery. Its most obvious when you look at the battery usage history in settings. The Running statistic was about 10%+ before removing, now its 1% or less. Means that the phone is 'awake' much more often, even when screen is off. Edited March 8, 2010 by bounty123
Guest ak888 Posted March 9, 2010 Report Posted March 9, 2010 No joy battery life down to 12hrs now, going to try a few more things like disabling Panda Home etc. <_< Looks like I am in your camp - my phones lasts around 12 hours. Usage is just arond 5mins calls. Maybe 10 mins browsing. I don't have background data on but 3g is on. However, where I sit at work it commonly drops to G. If I don't plug it in by the end of the day, it will definitely die. Most disappointing aspect of the pulse. Does anyone who has it running for more han a day leave it on overnight?

Switched on yesterday morning @ about 6, then on all day & night with about 1 hour of internet use but with 3G switched off. Battery was at 50% just now.
Guest bindi Posted March 9, 2010 Report Posted March 9, 2010 Mine last 3+ days with low usage. - 3G switched off all the time. - Wifi, GPS, Bluetooth all off. - Beautiful widget (weather and clock included) + 15-16 other apps on home screen + Battery widget (not the battery consuming one) - 20 min of calls + 10 min of surfing + other checks with screen on average everyday. One major improvement is I have seen on my battery is when I locked my phone on 2G, it improved my battery life dramaticaly.

Disable 'Security & location -> Use wireless networks' option. That made a big difference for me. 2. Disable 3G Don't disable them all at once otherwise you won't know which is the culprit! Try them one by one and see how you get on.
Guest meinnit Posted March 9, 2010 Report Posted March 9, 2010 Just a thought....people with bad battery life, are you using apps2sd? Also people with good battery life are you NOT using apps2sd? My battery life is reasonable and I'm not using apps2sd. Would be good to eliminate this from our investigations!
Guest Nirva Posted March 9, 2010 Report Posted March 9, 2010 I have had similar good battery life with APP2SD and without APP2SD. I do not turn my phone off over night. I think that the combination of APNDroid, setCPU and not to much widgets are the reason for my phone's good battery life...
Guest meinnit Posted March 9, 2010 Report Posted March 9, 2010 This thread confirms that disabling 'Security & location -> Use wireless networks' options does improve battery life. See page 3 for comments from people that disabled this and saw an increase in battery life. It seems annonymous location statistics that Google collect using this option is really having an effect on battery life...probably due to constant polling! Maybe this has been fixed in later releases? Wow...great find!! I just wrote a novel on my frustrations and I can tell this already has helped!!! The phone seems to be running faster too!! Thanks!! So i went ahead an tried his advice, i turned off "use wireless networks" and i had also already had my gps turned off for a couple days, and i must say this helps your batter life ALOT. The battery life is now really decent, woke up 8 this morning with 100% battery life, have played games, dl apps, sent txt, etc etc, its 11:00am now and am at 86% percent battery life, which is alot better than what i was getting in pervious days. so i recommed that if you want to conserve batter life, you follow that advice, the thread goes into more details on why exactly this works I just did this this morning...and the battery life is much much better. Not where I'd like it, but still a lil suttin suttin....and by a little i mean maybe 100% better than before. Please try it and see how you get on!

I tried using setCPU after reading this thread and its worked wonders, the phone should come with an advanced features menu, use at your own risk with setCPU on it! I used to have my GPS on all the time ready for google maps. 3G on and everything except wifi. Tried APNDriod, turned my backlight all the way down the 0% which saves alot of juice! Been on for 24 hours now and 70% battery life remaining! Used to be lucky getting 18 hours out of the phone.

Always had the 'Security & location -> Use wireless networks' option off. Today I disabled 3G and had 2G on. Battery life improved a some. Its 12 hours now and I am on 29% left. Did have it switched off for an hour in the middle. What was strange was when I switched it off, the battery was around 58% and then when I switched back on it was around 40%. These readings are from OpenHome in the corner where is states it.
