Sense Theme Problems

I just got my nTelos (CDMA) Hero this week and flashed it with the Sprint RUU / MoDaCo 2.2. This is my first Android phone, so please forgive me if these are newbie questions:

Is there a mod/hack out that will allow a wider wallpaper?

- I'd like to get a true 7 screen wallpaper instead of the default 2 screen wallpaper so I can create a custon background with "zones" for my apps.

What is the correct procedure for modifying the boot.gif animated gif?

- I've found several examples, but no clear directions.

- I tried modifying the gif in fireworks, and it displays correctly on the computer, but what displays on the phone looks scrambled.
