Guest mcmilliron Posted March 6, 2010 Report Posted March 6, 2010 (edited) Hey Guys, I've had my i910 for about a year and three months now and I must say, I am definitely ready for an upgrade. The i910 has some decent hardware but in the end, the phone has given me more grief than pleasure. Problem # 1. I've had my phone replaced 4 times due to the screen not aligning, and out of those 4, only one has had good touch responsiveness. The screens on these phones are complete junk. Yes, I know I can buy a new screen which would fix the crappy sensitivity, but I honestly don't have the patience to do it myself and I don't want to put money into something Samsung should have publicly addressed and taken care of at no cost. Problem # 2. Windows 6.1 is not designed for use with fingers and should not have been released on this phone. Sure, there are plenty of 6.5 Rom's available but customers should not have to dig around forums to find a custom 6.5 ROM that is not supported by Samsung or Verizon. This phone should have received an official 6.5 upgrade and that's all there is to it. I am disappointed in Samsung and Version for not addressing this issue. Problem # 3. While flashing to a 6.5.3 Rom does make the phone light years better, it still runs like Windows Vista when compared to the iPhone. If you are in denial of this, you have clearly never used an iPhone. Hell, the original iPhone runs laps around the Omnia. Now, before you start calling me an apple fan boy. I have never owned an Apple product and I never plan to, but that doesn't change the fact that the iPhone runs like a dream when compared to the Omnia. Problem # 4. The proprietary head phone/charger mini USB connection is the stupidest design ever. Problem # 5. The GPS is terrible. A-GPS is finially working in Google maps but it's accuracy is laughable! I am really hoping that Microsoft can deliver a truly polished Windows Phone 7 series phone by Christmas or I am probably going to switch over to Android, and I really don't want to. What are your thoughts? Edited March 6, 2010 by mcmilliron
Guest mcmilliron Posted March 6, 2010 Report Posted March 6, 2010 One more thing. I really don't like the Omnia's screen size. It's to small and to narrow.

What are your thoughts? 1) Not agree... My screen response is VERY GOOD, no matter what rom I'm using. 2) Agree, except KC 6.1 21001 build (from OMNIA), which is the very best 6.1 around! 3) Of course they are, since MacOS is better than any Windows... But, I had also iPhone and I'm saying this: iPhone is JUST an amazing... GADGET, that's all! 4) I agree... 5) Not at all... I'm locking more or less in 12''!!!
Guest lordv8r Posted March 7, 2010 Report Posted March 7, 2010 One more thing. I really don't like the Omnia's screen size. It's to small and to narrow. Then why did you buy it? Didn't you see the size of the screen in the store?
Guest gowers Posted March 7, 2010 Report Posted March 7, 2010 I've had the device for about as long as you I agree on some aspects, actually. The Omnia is certainly not a bad smartphone, I loved it when I first got it and still enjoy tweaking and using it, but it does have some shortfalls that are just recently starting to leave a bad impression, particularly the weird wqvga screen resolution that isn't supported by some third-party software/themes, and the screen sensitivity. I wasn't fond of WinMo 6.1 and the lack of an inbuilt stylus cradle either, but custom roms and a case have solved those issues well. Bad points aside, it's still a well built and attractive device, has a great camera (for a phone) and I've had no issues with GPS, it has always worked perfectly for me. I am still contemplating an HD2 though because it looks too good to pass up, but with the announcement of WP7s I might hold off and give the Omnia a little more love.
Guest lupus_hegemonia Posted March 7, 2010 Report Posted March 7, 2010 (edited) Then why did you buy it? Didn't you see the size of the screen in the store? HAHAHHAAHHAHAHAHA!!! Exactly! Dear author of this thread... You obviously have quite much of cash (yours or from your parents) and you just going and buying things, are you? Me, when I want to buy something and because I'm a free lancer pro in my job (from... 00 - 1400 euros per month, only, unfortunatelly), I'm doing a huge research for 2-4 months, I'm testing quite many devices and finaly... I'm going to a store, "playing" live with the products and... buying what I want. And it's my choice what I bought, my responsibility, not... the product's company. OMNIA i900... WAS... one (if not THE) of the BEST smart/touch screen phones in the planet! I'm sure, the new OMNIAs (or the new Samsung phone, generally) will be SUPERB and more better than i900! Don't forget... i900 is TWO COMPLETE YEARS OLD MODEL!!! In our days, in present days, TWO years means... ancient device!!! And finaly... I own ALSO a 3G iPhone!!!!!!!... You know WHY I bought it? Because it's a fine... GADGET (not phone!) and it's a perfect "trap" for... chicks!!! HAHAHA! Edited March 7, 2010 by lupus_hegemonia
Guest mcmilliron Posted March 7, 2010 Report Posted March 7, 2010 The Omnia was hands down the best smart phone at Verizon when it came out. My brother bought it for me Christmas of 08 and I was very excited to have it. Unfortunately my excitement died quickly when I realized I had to use my fingernail to do anything on the device and the stock software was pretty unimpressive. However, it was still the best smart phone available at the time so I dealt with it. Thanks to all the amazing ROM cookers on this site like Blazing Wolf and Lioryte, the Omina is a much much much better phone to use, but it still can't compare to the speed and smoothness of the iPhone, which has lower specs!!! I guess I'm just disappointed that the Omina, with it's relatively impressive specs, doesn't run better. I assume it's mostly do to the aging Windows Mobile OS that they keep trying to update? I even tried SPB Mobile shell, which does makes it run smoother, but as soon as you launch email, text messaging, or a program, you are quickly reminded that you are using a Windows Mobile device. Overall, the Omnia is a good phone minus the screen, the OS, and the GPS. And about the GPS. When I use AGPS in Google maps, the closest it will locate me is 1000 meters, and more often 4000 meters!!! That's not very accurate.
Guest mcmilliron Posted March 7, 2010 Report Posted March 7, 2010 And finaly... I own ALSO a 3G iPhone!!!!!!!... You know WHY I bought it? Because it's a fine... Guest Abqcub Posted March 7, 2010 Report Posted March 7, 2010 I gotta agree with the original poster, after 8 months I'm so damn sick of this phone. At the time it was the best phone on Verizon so thats why I purchased it. I'm just so sick of flashing roms, trying to find the right resolution, lack of fun games, screen size is awkward, the resistive screen is a joke, and windows mobile is just not a decent os. I'm trying to figure out how I can get myself an Eris or a Droid. I mean I feel my friends G1 is a better phone than mine, and thats a freakin' old G1.
Guest lupus_hegemonia Posted March 7, 2010 Report Posted March 7, 2010 Last time I checked out my girfriend's iPhone, it was indeed a Phone. <_< Is it?... From my part, it's a funcy... trinket!
Guest Billus Posted March 7, 2010 Report Posted March 7, 2010 3) Of course they are, since MacOS is better than any Windows... But, I had also iPhone and I'm saying this: iPhone is JUST an amazing... GADGET, that's all! You have got to be joking if you think MacOSX is better than ANY Windows. Pretty sure any version of Windows is better than OSX, that's why many Apple users use boot camp in order to run Windows on their Macs. Just go to an Apple store and ask a series of questions to the idiots over there, bet is, when you ask them a question they can't answer, say games, decent version of Office or anything useful, they try and tell you that you can run Windows. Seriously, running Windows on a $2500 machine with 2 y/o hardware (Core2Duo) is quite a rip in my opinion. Never owned any of Apple's products though but I have used them, their okay for 10 minutes but then you get bored. Besides, music quality wise, the Zune runs laps around it. And the geek squad or whatever they're called should be ashamed to rip off consumers over the age of 60. Anyways, back to the OP. You pretty much right. I have to admit that I'm disappointed over this phone and should have stuck with HTC. I mean, it's a great phone but it has hardly any memory which is predominately why it's not so good (<100mb). GPS runs great for me, I use IGO and it hooks up to a satellite in less than 30 seconds and the screen isn't half bad but compared to my old HTC, it does suck. Looking forward for my new Windows 7 Series Phone <_< Definitely will try and go with a physical qwerty keyboard this time round.
Guest Sb. Posted March 7, 2010 Report Posted March 7, 2010 You cant go out and buy a family sedan and be upset that it doesn't move like a sports car. The omnia was created to run windows mobile 6.1. If you bought it and had no idea what its like thats your own fault but the hype created around the launch and media stating its an iphone killer also had partly to do with it which is where I feel sorry for some people as my friends sister bought it thinking it was like an iphone but was shocked to find out how difficult the phone was to use especially with long finger nails and the fact that you needed that stupid stylus hanging off the side. I showed her my setup at the time running SPB and she was thrilled at the ease and beauty but upset that after paying so much for the phone she had to fork out even more to make it usable. My phone had something like the sleep bug from factory which was annoying as id go to show the phone off and its dead then having to remove the cover and battery plus waiting for it to load was embarrassing especially cos they had iphones. The phone would freeze as well every so often. My other friend changed his screen 3 times too. Everythings good now with custom Roms though and I grew to love this phone but a lot of fiddling around I must admit and I can understand peoples frustration.

I'm 40+ years old, working as GRAPHIC DESIGNER since 22... in BOTH computer formats, MacOS AND Windows! I... HATE... Apple & Macintosh, for my own reasons. I do preffer PCs from Macintosh for many things, but one of them IS NOT Windows!!! If you have spend SO many years working with BOTH of them like me, you would understand that Apple & Macintosh doesn't giving you the TONES of different solutions (with so many programs, like Windows does), but APPLE OS is FAR... WAY FAR MORE STABLE & SIMPLE than Windows!!! Even now, with this ONLY Windows (7) that I'm trusting and loving so much, I'm STILL believe MacOS is better & more stable (and simple) than Windows... And in case you don't know, BILL GATES stole Apple's software, not the other way around... And I'm saying all these, while I'm working with BOTH of these two different systems... and YOU DON'T - you never did! About HTCs... There are fine phones too... But! When OMNIA released, NOTHING was better than OMNIA! And believe me, I've spend 4+ months of hard research & reviews... RIGHT NOW, I do believe the HTC Touch 2 or Hero are (maybe) better, but I'm trusting Samsung and I believe they'll give us something special in the next months... That's complete crap that Bill Gates stole Job's OS or any of his ideas. You think MacOSX is much more stable? You've gotta be kidding me. One bad driver install and you can send your Mac packing; endless reboots and spinning circles. There was also the issue with Snow Leopard which took a few months to resolve where a user would log into a guest account and it would do a clean wipe. I have nothing against Samsung, I think their phones are great, especially when looking at the battery life and I'll stick with my Omnia until Windows 7 Ready Phone's come out. Basically, it'll come down to a 4 way race when it comes to the launch of Windows 7 Phone Series. You've got HTC, Samsung, LG and Sony trying to push out the most powerful phones (ever) in the June-November period. It'll be interesting and it will also be interesting to see if Apple finally makes some changes to their 4th gen iPhone. Hopefully we see manufactures stick in those new 1.5ghz dual core Qualcomm chips in those phones or even go for a Tegra which ramps at 2ghz. Edited March 7, 2010 by Billus
Guest lupus_hegemonia Posted March 7, 2010 Report Posted March 7, 2010 Well... like I said, I'm 40+ and I already tired... this "who has bigger c*ck" conversation!!!! I wrote I'm working with BOTH systems for my HALF of my life... If you "Billus" or anyone else thinks you know better than me, hey... FINE, I don't give a damn, I don't care if you doesn't agree with me!!! Believe me, I'm going to sleep well in a while, I'll not be upset if you don't agree with me... Jesus! By the way... READ A BLOODY BOOK or search around, for this story about B. Gate's steel! Or, like you modern people do, "educate" yourself by... watching... a bloody movie for THIS story! Here: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0168122/ Never my work Mac gone "packed" after a bad driver; neither my home PC too... Watch carefully what YOU installing, m8! Anyway... like I said, I'm quite old fellow to playing "who has bigger c*ck" game... Believe what you like, I'm really, honestly don't bloody care...
Guest Abqcub Posted March 8, 2010 Report Posted March 8, 2010 Oh look its a "my os is better than yours" fight! Why does every tech forum eventually dissolve into this age old fight? For the record I must say, I hate Windows, but 7 has its definite improvements. Mac's are expensive for the hardware you get, but the OS is solid. Linux is awesome and I'm currently running Ubuntu as my main OS, except for when I need to boot XP for Illustrator and InDesign. So they all good stuff and bad stuff. When it comes to phone OS's WinMo is just flat out behind the times. 6.5 was a temporary band aid till 7 comes out, but its still old code based off old ideas. iPhone may be a "tinker toy" but everyone I know with one is incredibly satisfied, and thats not even the jailbroken ones. And how is not a phone? It calls, its texts, it emails, surfs the web, how is it not a phone? Same goes for Android, everything just works straight out of the box. Theres custom roms if you want, but it isn't necessary to flash one just because your phone gives you a low memory warning every time you touch the screen. Also some of the custom roms have over the air updates, and with the release of 2.0 all programs are scaled automatically to every resolution. Both Apple and Google have redefined what a smart phone is, and gave people something they didn't even know they wanted. Microsoft is still trying make business PDA's that can make a phone call. Even now, Android and Apple have business oriented apps. Right now WinMo is old news and the omnia is ancient in the tech timeline. When 7 comes out it may be a different story but thats still months if not a year down the road. Oh and all those fancy programs you overpaid for on WinMo, won't work on 7. And our old devices won't have a chance of running 7 based off the specs of the first launch phones.
Guest mcmilliron Posted March 8, 2010 Report Posted March 8, 2010 Abqcub Thank you for getting my point. The Omnia really does run like Windows Vista when compared to other modern smart phones, and Microsoft is taking way too long to release Windows Phone 7. Buy the time it comes out, it will probably be nothing at all to get excited about. I am a fan of Microsoft but they have really slacked on their mobile OS and I don't know if they'll be able to pull themselves out of the hole they've dug. I hope they do but I wouldn't bet on it.
Guest scubamike Posted March 8, 2010 Report Posted March 8, 2010 (edited) My number one complaint regarding the I910 is the insensitivity of the resistive screen. My phone has been replaced once for that issue and the new phone provided a DRAMATIC improvement, but it is still not a capacitive screen. The being said, I'm sold on the I910 to the point where I don't want to "upgrade" to any of Verizon's new phones. The Omnia II, at least the one I tested at the store, seemed to have a slightly less sensitive screen and I920 forum says it scratches MUCH easier than the I910. The other con for me is the absence of the mouse/D-pad. I like the 5.0 mp camera WITH flash that the Omnia has over any other Verizon phone, and, to be honest, I am very comfortable and satisfied with Windows. I am a business user and this phone is invaluable to my income. Edited March 8, 2010 by scubamike
