I have a Hero which I was given . It has a Build number : MoDaCo Custom Rom 2.8 core, SSH and then a password. The software version is 1.0.0.A6288 The Firmware version is 1.5

Can I possible upgrade this? If so to what and where can I locate the upgrade?

The phone cover has an Orange tag on it. the phone works on any sim card.

Please could someone advise me what my options are and will I loose my sim free status if I upgrade?

thanks

If the phone works with any SIM it's been SIM-Unlocked. No, you won't loose the ability to use any sim if you upgrade. I'd recommend only upgrading to a custom ROM as if you upgrade to a stock orange rom you may not be able to switch back to custom (at least not easily) in the future.

Upgrade for MCR is here.

Radio upgrade is here.

I'd recommend upgrading the recovery image as well to the latest AmonRa release available here.

Hope this helps. <_<

There is a new version of the Modaco Custom ROM, you can download it from here, right now this is the best ROM

http://android.modaco.com/content/htc-hero...online-kitchen/

Secondly the phone which you have is permanently unlocked flashing new ROM won't affect it infact nothing will affect it, the unlock procedure is permanent.

Many thanks for the prompt reply. Since I am new to this is there a step by step procedure that i could follow. Do I treat this as a "virgin" Hero or is it considered modified , for the upgrade procedure?

thanks again

Yes! this phone is modified as it has MCR 2.8 and it has the custom recovery image :-

Go here for Custom recovery image :-

Download the custom ROM from the link I gave you before and you'll get all the details of flashing a custom ROM on this page.

IMHO, I'd stick with 3.1 and avoid 3.2 as it's a beta. Been having major problems with 3.2 and Co-Pilot, so if your planing to use Co-Pilot stick with 3.1.

If you are facing any problems with connectivity of the device then yes you can upgrade it but otherwise it's not needed really (It's not necessary to upgrade it)
