Flashing DATA.IMG

What are the inherent risks involved with flashing the data.img file from a Nandroid backup to another ROM which may sometimes have some significant differences from the one you were using previously?

For example, if I was using Cyanogen's 5.0.4.1 ROM and switched to Paul's Desire Alpha ROM. What would be the downsides or pitfalls involved with doing a Fastboot flash of my data.img from one ROM to the next?

it would be just the same as not wiping before installing MCR over CM.

probably causing instabilities.

if you want something thats inside that image, unyaffs (google that for a download) it, and carefully try to push the things over.

I'll look into that.

What about say going from an MCR Alpha to another Alpha? Same problem?

MCR is totally different to desire alpha.

as long as you stick to the same rom, different version you should be fine. (like going from mcr 1.8 to 1.9 or desire a12 to a13 and so on)

but in general you never have to flash that image.

its on your /data partition anyway, just don't wipe before updating and it stays there unharmed <_<
