Hero no longer detects PC connection

About 2 weeks ago my Hero stopped detecting when it was connected via USB to my XP laptop. It still charges but the "connected via USB" notification that used to appear on the phone no longer appears.

It hasnt been flashed and is less than 6 months old. This is a total pain because i cant use HTC Sync, and have to remove my SD card and use a SD card reader to put files onto it.

I've tried hard and soft resets. I've updated my PC drivers, and used different Pcs and laptops but still see the problem. I upgraded, downgraded HTC Sync but the issue is with the phone. It simple can't detect it's plugged into a PC.

Does anyone else have any experience with this?

Have exactly the same problem myself.. just mine detects the PC on random occasions!

I did Wipe the phone.. using MCR 3.2 with kitchen.. but the same happened to me with 3.0 and 3.1 Roms and another Android 2.1 variant out there.

At first I thought that my Hero's USB connection is going dead (hardware wise).. but strangely when in the Recovery Image menu and select to USB Mount ON, it connects perfectly every time.. so it must be a Rom/Driver problem.

Sometimes I have to reset both Hero and PC to make it work (and this count for all the 4 PCs I have)

It's a total nightmare. I just don't get that "mount usb" message/notification anymore. Having already wiped the phone once with no effect. I don't know what to do. I agree that it must be an android HTC driver issue on the phone.

Have you checked to ensure Settings->Applications->Development->USB Debugging is off when connecting?

Don't forget to turn it back on if you want to perform any root stuff.

It could just be a worn lead/socket on the phone. I have used both the original USB lead and mini-type B with 100% success, so try another lead first.

Unless you have already tried this, what happens if you move the lead slightly, does it make a difference?

Carl.

Tried it with the supplied USB and a standard USB lead -with no luck. Tried 'wiggling' the USB connection too.

When I plug the phone into my laptop or PC. They both display the "USB device not recognised" notification in the bottom right of the screen. However my phone doesnt have the "mount usb" message/notification anymore.

As said earlier.. In Recovery Mode it works perfectly.. it's with the ROM fully loaded that gives trouble..

ANd yes.. sis try 4 different wires, coubled checked the connection and that no lose wire.. multiple PC (all same)

and keeps randomly connect..

Note: once connected.. there is no unwanted disconnections. all works fine.

It's once you disconnect that it's like a 50/50 connection detected or not

Since it works in recovery mode, use the Operator's RUU to flash the phone back to factory settings (do a nandroid backup and titanium backup beforehand so you don't lose your settings)

Once you have the original ROM, SPL and recovery, try your phone again and it should work fine.

Once you have done this and the original ROM doesn't offer anything, send it to your provider as faulty.

If it works then root the phone and install the ROM of your choice, see if its a problem with the ROM.

mmm.. are you saying me I should try to re-flash the original HTC rom?

It's not something I'd like to try.... and aynway, won't be sending my phone back for 'repair' if it's surely something of Rom/Driver compatibility.

I had the same problem for ages, with the exception of any PC I connected my phone to would completely freeze until the phone was unplugged. Tried everything you've done so far, phoned HTC who said 'hard reboot' the phone by taking the battery out while the phone is still on, then to try a factory reset/wipe then to wait for the next software update from Orange.

Told them I wasn't happy with that as I had already upgraded it and the fault never cleared (didn't mention that I'd tried 3 other custom ROMs) and they took it in for repair. They replaced the USB connector and it's been working fine for the last 2 weeks now.

On a seperate note, before you can return it, you'll need to remove the custom rom and recovery using the official RUU, which needs a working USB connection, might be a small problem. I've worked through this with pulsar recently, see here. Had to downgrade the version when I got it back (just used the heroimg method as the RUU was giving me grief) and re-rooted the phone, all good after that. Have a read through that post and let us know how you get on.

Thanks for the info dude..

But for me, not worth the hassle to get back to the original ROM and send it back to HTC..

The phone connects 50/50.. but when it doesn't, it's simply a matter of e-mailing myself over Gmail whatever I want.. so basically it's Wireless Data transfer from the PC and works better then any Bluetooth device I tried (Actually for smaller files sometimes e-mailing is faster :-P )

Again.. the behaviour is random.. and I really don't think it's hardware related since once it connects, it doesn't re-disconnect or anything.. and the remove 'battery while on' work temporary

No worries. Cool, it's your choice at the end of the day. Just keep an eye on it as it might just keep getting worse and worse and if it does make sure it's sorted before your warranty runs out.

BTW, it took HTC about 1 week to collect the phone, fix it and return it. I was out of the country for 8 days and it was waiting for me when I got back. They pay for everything, except the printing of the delivery label.

Totally agree about the 'hard-reboot' only being temporary, it's actually made things worse for me before. Before I sent it in for repair it suddenly started working again, did the hard-reboot for some reason (can't remember why now) after successfully doing multiple normal reboots and all the problems returned. Pain in the arse I tell you, pain in the arse!

As if by magic. It works now. Nothing more was done or tried. It just miraculously started detecting pc/laptops again.

LOL! Awesome! Happened to me a couple of times, but then stopped again. Been working fine since it was sent back though.

God works in mysterious ways. Windows fails to work in mysterious ways. Our Toppy (Topfield UK Freeview PVR) worked fine for a couple of years, then the attached PC decided not merely that it wouldn't recognise it over USB, but that the hardware had failed. I tried all sorts to diagnose it, to no avail. About a week after I had given up, it started working again by itself. I reckon the core problem is that there are a lot of dodgy drivers out there. Low level system code can have hellish bugs that are a nightmare to trace.

If it happens again you may want to try the info in this thread (and the ones linked off of it). My Hero had the same symptoms for a while. It would also start working again for long periods. It turned out my issue was a hardware problem that got so bad in the end the phone stopped charging. There are also quite a few reports of this appearing around the place, maybe it was an issue with the first batch of phones produced.
