If I want to 'root' my Pulse, where do I start?

I have not had my Pulse even a week yet, but I'm quite keen to try out some of the 'hacks' on it, or is it called.. 'rooting'? Sorry, I'm not sure.. but I was wondering if someone could point me in the direction of where I should start? I read some of the stickies, but, they're pretty confusing and I don't really know what to do.

Could this like.. brick my phone? If I get it wrong, of course.

Hi

It took me a week to get up the nerve to try and it wasn't so hard at all, now I've tried both roms and customised it like a htc hero. I had one 'incident' where it got stuck in a boot loop but i managed to get it back to the december update and just started again. I think you can brick it but as long as it doesn't run out battery while doing something important or become if charging etc it will (probably) survive enough to start again from scratch.

Start with superboot and amon ra recovery imho

From what I can gather from the stickied thread, all I have to do is plug my phone in, start it up by holding those buttons, then install that file from the zip folder and job done.. right? Is there anything more I have to do from there? What about backing up my current rom too?

Rooting isn't a new rom, you should be ok without a backup. I would install superboot, and the recovery image. If you do install another rom afterwards, backup beforehand.

Wow, all of this really does confuse me.

I'll start with installing Superboot then.. whatever that is.

Just read through the threads, it should explain it more. I figured it out so I'm sure you will!

Yeah, I really don't understand why I can't work this out. I'm not a total idiot when it comes to things like this, but it just confuses me..

I just tried, got the blue screen and nothing happened. GREAT START. :L

Okay.. so I think it's been a success. From what I can gather, I seem to have successfully installed Superboot and the recovery image. So I now have two more "apps" on my menu called Quick Boot and Superuser Permissions. Now what do I do? <_<

Did you run the file on your computer? You won't see a whole lot happen but it should say okay on the blue screen afterwards. Did you install the pc suite on your pc first? The drivers are part of the installation.

edit - you beat me to it

Depends... what did you want to do when you set out?

I have no idea. I don't even know what rooting it really does. :L isn't it extra cool themes, or something?

I should probably do a backup of my phone too. From what I can read, can't you do that from booting it up in recovery mode?

edit: Okay I tried to do a BART backup but I got an error saying "Run 'bart' via adb!"

Okay! Thanks! I did a regular Nand backup, not even a Nand + ext backup worked. Okay so what should be done now? Or anything?

By the way, what ARE the benefits of rooting the phone? What does it actually give me?

Well atleast your not limited to what you can install now. I havnt rooted and its really annoying finding out that the app you want requires it to be rooted..

Well, there are no disadvantages so win win
