Guest miles_muso Posted March 11, 2010 Report Posted March 11, 2010 Hi all, I own a Samsung Omnia, with a Sector/Khuanchai flashed WindowsMobile 6.5 as the OS (PDA = i900DXIA5/DZIA5, phone = i900NSPR0) and with SPB Mobile Shell as the GUI. I have installed various apps, so I'm no stranger to adding and configuring new applications. I work on a cruise ship 3 months out of every 4 (as a musician) and, even with a £45 contract on O2 with various international bolt-ons, etc, my bills are consistently over £150 per month for a dozen or so calls that would be basically free if made in the UK. Skype has to be the better option, but I'm confused as to how to set it up and I've had different advice froms so-called 'experts' who have managed to confuse me even more! Therefore, even though all the advice I seek must be available somewhere on the net, I would feel happier getting it all in one place and from people who know what they're talking about. When I get off the ship at a port, there is invariably some free Wi-Fi about that I can connect to, or even just pay a few dollars for an hour, so that seems the way to go. But: (1) What is the best Skype app to use (Skype's own??) and what parameters do I need? (2) If someone calls my mobile whilst I'm in a port and hooked up to Wi-Fi, will Skype intercept that call or can I manually switch it to Skype? The reason is that calls still cost me up to £1.20 per minute to receive in some countries. Or should I just send them a template text telling them to call me on my Skype number. (2a) Also, will Skype be able to use my existing list of contacts for outgoing and/or incoming calls? (3) On 22nd Dec 2009 I got an email telling me that Skpe has activated my Skype To Go number. What is this, exactly? (4) When I call people from my mobile using Skype, will my O2 number be displayed on their handset, or will it be a different number? If so, do i tell people to store that number under my contact? (5) All my contact numbers are stored in +44 format, as that's what I have to use when phoning from overseas. Will Skype be able to use these? (6) The latest release of Skype for WM doesn't have audio routing. What is it, and why should I want/need it? Phew! Quite a lot to ask, I know, but I really hope you can help me. I'm back on the ship April 17th for another 3 months and I'd love to have it all set up by then. Thanks in advance, PS. If someone doesn't mind taking the time to help me with this, I'll donate half of what I save on my O2 bill in the first month to a charity of their choice. And why not? It'll make me feel good, and you as well! PPS The above PS isn't meant as bribery, it just dawned on me that I'd be saving a fair bit of money if it all works, and it would be nice to put that money to good use. <_< miles_muso

Guest leunamme Posted March 11, 2010 Report Posted March 11, 2010 (edited) Hi there.. not an expert on Skype but i've been a user almost a year now (FREE of CHARGE) Hope to enlighten you a bit <_< (1) What is the best Skype app to use (Skype's own??) and what parameters do I need? Skype is similar to Yahoo Messenger, used for chat and calls (hope you are familiar with). unfortunately Skype apparently stop its support for Windows mobile. but you can try downloading this on some sites http://www.freewarepocketpc.net/get-skype-v2-2-0-36.html I signed up for the free.. Not Skype Credit.. Im using the free account i.e. call is from Skype user to Skype user setup.. I hook up to Wi-Fi always and on my experience, I can use Free calls still from the last time I checked, skype didn't intercept my calls. I can have uncut calls that even lasts to 1 hour (call from overseas, lots of money saved :(), coz wi-fi and call drains my battery fast. Im not sure on the cost of call using Skype Number/ Skype Credit.... i didn't register for one. So i suggest they call you on your Skype user ID from their Skype user IDs also.. My Skype user Id is what i use, which i used my e-mail address when i registered, not my number. (2a) Also, will Skype be able to use my existing list of contacts for outgoing and/or incoming calls? im not particular on this one... maybe depending on the preferences you set on the settings. (3) On 22nd Dec 2009 I got an email telling me that Skpe has activated my Skype To Go number. What is this, exactly? Sorry don't kknow this one, coz i didn't register my number on Skype so my Skype credit is not Active. For your questions 4 and 5, i didn't Buy Skype credit and call on numbers so sorry for no input on this.. but i saw some settings on this. (6) The latest release of Skype for WM doesn't have audio routing. What is it, and why should I want/need it? I think this is if you want to use bluetooth headset (not sure really). All the best things in life are free :D Try also the other suggestion http://www.fring.com/download/ Good Luck and safe voyage! Edited March 11, 2010 by leunamme
Guest kimitza Posted March 11, 2010 Report Posted March 11, 2010 (edited) i strongly recommend Nimbuzz. VoIP, yahoo, msn, skype, jabber, all known messengers <_<. try it and you won't be sorry 1. skype for mobile (skype ppc 2.5) or nimbuzz. i like the second more. 2. with that nimbuzz program you get a "buzz". you will receive a notification which will tell you to logon to nimbuzz. This way you save alot of money. The notification is free of charge. 2a. Nimbuzz allows you to manage your phone contacts. When you make a call, it will ask you what to do : call from gsm or use nimbuzz or skype credits( nimbuzz credits are the same as skype = veeery cheap ) 3. don't know. better search on google or on skype site. there must be FAQ's there. 4. As far as i know, there are 2 options with the number : hidden id(unknown caller) or a number from your friend's country.(for example, here in Romania it shows a 031+++++++ number). 5. I don't buy skype credits(as i can use nimbuzz for free), so i can't tell you this  6. don't know . never used a BT headset. Edited March 11, 2010 by kimitza
