Guest raburgess Posted March 11, 2010 Report Posted March 11, 2010 Does anyone know of a HTC Hero repair service preferably in the UK, I have damaged the front housing at the top of the phone and want to repair it before I sell it on. If this is not a possibility then I will have to open it up itself, does anyone have any experience of whether or not this is an easy task? I have the available manual and videos regarding assembling and disassembling the phone.
Guest VictorBR Posted March 11, 2010 Report Posted March 11, 2010 I just opened mine to replace the housing and touchscreen. I didn't have past experience, but managed to do just fine by following the official HTC guide. So you could probably do it too, as long as you are careful and have patience to deal with small parts. As to me, I'm pretty happy... my Hero looks and feels brand new now... <_<
Guest bjornes Posted March 11, 2010 Report Posted March 11, 2010 (edited) Where can we buy spare parts? my front housing is also a little damaged, and I'd like to change it. I noticed in the HTC guide that the touchscreen is glued to the housing. Can I replace the front of the housing and use the old touchscreen, or do I need to replace both? Yeh I would also like to know this, is there any adhesive product that will do the trick.
Guest VictorBR Posted March 11, 2010 Report Posted March 11, 2010 I found the spare parts on eBay. You should look for the best sellers, though, to avoid non-original parts. I can't be completely sure, since I also changed my touchscreen, but yes, I believe you can put the same touchscreen back on, since some of the glue will still be sticked on it and it also remains attached to the housing by pressure. Hope it helps you to decide.
Guest iammodo Posted March 13, 2010 Report Posted March 13, 2010 PM Andrew-Mac he has a spare case. I can order them from HTC as I work in a repair centre. But that would take time. The HTC Hero is possibly one of the easiest phones to take apart.

Guest nolimit966 Posted May 7, 2010 Report Posted May 7, 2010 I had problems taking my HTC Magic apart becuase the GPS & Bluetooth antennas were sticky foil which rips really easiliy
Guest RitchieTheBrit Posted May 16, 2010 Report Posted May 16, 2010 I have just taken my GSM Hero apart after dropping it in the bath yesterday. It's working okay now after being in the airing cupboard overnight in bit, in a bag of rice, but the speaker and screen need replacing. There seems to be some moisture behind the screen. Its usable, but annoying, and the speaker is just terrible. If I'm going to strip it to fix this, I would also love to replace the casing after a slight drop a few weeks ago. Can anyone point me in the right direction for a UK supplier? I would prefer factory original, but anything that's decent will do! I found some screens on fleaBay, but the OEM ones are pretty pricey, and the others are Chinese copies from what I can tell.

Hi Ritchie, if the LCD is still functional, strip it down and clean the translucent backing layer that disperses the LED backlighting - this gets water behind it and gives the effect of a tide mark when lit up. If you're gonna replace the lcd anyway what have you got to loose?.... M.S

I will try this before I order a new screen (pretty skint right now), but if there's a good chance of screwing the screen any more I will wait, I need my phone too much :)

Without seeing the specific lcd couldn't say how to do it. removing the metal outer there is usally a shiny metal foil back piece that can be fully removed - pull this out and clean it noting which way around it fits. Then there is a clear plastic 1mm thick layer - don't try to remove this the led's are at the other end, just clean it with IPA. The actual LCD is the top layer - clean the back of this that goes onto the clear plastic layer. sounds difficult but is simple when you've done a couple. M.S
Guest RitchieTheBrit Posted May 16, 2010 Report Posted May 16, 2010 Cheers Mysterious Stranger. I have read that other people with this problem notice the marks can fade and disappear after a while, so I'll see if it clears up, if not, clean, and then order a new screen if I screw it up! Can anyone help with a UK supplier for the spares though? I would love to recase my Hero in black, and the speaker is pretty bad (though there may still be some water in there possibly?).

Marks could be due to the screen stil having moisture behind it - try leaving it plugged in with the backlight on full power to see if that helps get some heat through it. M.S

Strange, I thought I posted again? Ah well, lol! The screen is clear once more, I left it on charge overnight without turning the screen off, and all was good. The speaker is still pretty bad, so I would dearly like to replace that and the case. I have found a few, but they are all overseas, and I won't get a chinese one until I hear some good feeback, and see some pics...
