Official updates over custom ROM

Hi,

First time poster here but have been following the forums for a long time. Anyway, my question was that, for example, if I am currently running the 1.9 MoDaCo Custom ROM and new official updates start rolling in to my phone, can I just safely install the updates or will they even install correctly or at all without using a custom rom what has the update?

The official updates won't install on top of a custom rom
