Orange - no HSPDA or 3G

Hi Folks,

I have had a play with various 2.1 based ROM's on my phone, but decided to go back to MCR3.2, however, since going back I notice I cannot get 3G or HSPDA on my orange connection. When I check settings, about phone etc, it tells me I am connected to Orange on a GPRS network.

I have completely, and I mean completely wiped my phone, and reloaded 3.2 from scratch, re-installed all my apps, and still this is a problem. Is this related to the radio version I am running? I did upgrade a while back (may have been due to a 2.1 ROM that recommended it, cannot quite remember). But dont think I have ever run 3.x from this radio.

I am currently running 63.18.5506_JU_6.35.09.26, has anyone else had this problem? Which version should I be using with a 1.5 based ROM.

WIFI works fine, GPRS works fine but way to slooooowwww for normal use..

Thanks,

Carl.

Reflash radio

Already tried that, even gone back one to 63.18.55.06JU_6.35.08.29 and still only GPRS. Does anyone else have a similar issue with Orange at the moment?

Carl.

PS Also, where is the 'Enable 2G setting only' gone in MCR3.2? I wondered if this was the cause?

3.2 is based on a 3 rom, so no settings for 2g in the basic software.

go to your phone and dial *#*#4636#*#* and go into phone information, scroll down and change "Set preferred network type:" to GSM only or WCDMA only or whatever.

Unfortunately it doesnt seem to survive a reboot, so you will have to set it every time

Thank you, so kindly! Forgot about the radio settings, I have set WCDMA only, as I get good coverage where I am, and it appears to have worked now, so question....how can this be persisted between reboots? Is there a settings file on the phone that could be edited?

Thanks,

Carl.

Afraid I dont know the answer to that one

It's ok. I set it WCDMA preferred and it has survived a reboot, so I guess this must be lost when you flash a new radio, or upgrade the ROM.

Thanks again,

Carl.

Hmm, interesting, thats the option mine always sets itself to when I restart.

It must be the rom's default? You have to decide to set it to GSM.

You're welcome

I had a similar problem after going from 3.2 b5 to BeHero 2.1 and then back to 3.2 and just could not get 3g or H to download on Orange. I tried reflashing the latest radio (and the 2 before that), doing a nandroid restore and installing Modaco 3.0 but nothing would fix it.

In the end what did work was to do the following (it's a slightly Heath Robinson approach so maybe all steps are not necessary).

* Boot to recovery, wipe both dalvik and cache (factory restore)

* Flash latest radio, reboot (the reboot goes back to recovery and shows (Formatting Cache...)

* Install Modaco 3.2 (I used a custom bake).

* Flash the latest radio again, reboot.

* Final reboot from recovery to working set up.

goto APN list and press menu button ----> default

This solved my problem, its not the radio problem..

Choosing the APN does not control the actual connection type used. Mine was set correctly and it didn't make a difference, nor does reflashing the radio.

In my case (as in others too) the '3' ROM version which was used to base 3.2 from does not include the option to choose between 2g or 3g as 3 IS 3g by definition, however, the settings on the phone were still accessible albeit in a different way (*#*#4636#*#*)

This me to revert back to WCDMA preferred and not GSM only which fixed the problem. As soon as I changed this and turned the radio off and back on again, ét voila...the 3G and HSDPA worked correctly again.

I've got this problem too ever since I flashed 3.2 on my Orange HTC Hero... NOTHING in this thread has worked for me though, I've even tried to go back to completely different ROMs, even newer 2.1 leaks but 3G is dead on every one?! I have no idea how 3.2 can cause this AND make it permanent...

After I thought that I'd solved my issue (post #11) it came back at the weekend so I could get 3g or H for about 1 hour but then nothing. Changing to GSM only worked but of course the speeds aren't there.

My latest thing to try is based around the 3g hack in build.prop which is present in 3.2 so I removed it today and so far I've had good speeds and a constant connection. The instructions on how to add the hack are here - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=595108 and the changes are already included in 3.2 so I just removed them and then pushed back the build.prop file.

davey444 would you be able to upload your modified ROM?

Sorry, I don't have a base nandroid of my set up at the moment. This is what I did and so far I've had full 3g and HSPA since I did it.

1) adb pull /system/build.prop build.prop

2) Backup the file!!

3) edit with notepad++ (or other unix format capable editor). Remove the info at the bottom of the script which says something like "# 3g hack test".

4) adb remount

5) adb push build.prop /system/build.prop

6) reboot

just signed up to these forums to say that these instructions helped me to recover internet access on my Orange HTC Hero after I flashed it with Paul's (non-customised!) MoDaCo 3.2 ROM. Still not getting any more than "G" for my connection but that's probably because I have rubbish reception in my house. At least I can now get some kind of internet access without WiFi whereas I couldn't before.

We'll see if HSPDA and/or 3G work when I go to work tomorrow.

Edit: Follow-up on 14th May 2010

Now that I've moved to a place where I get better signal, I can confirm that 3G and HSPDA are working fine with this tweak.

Thanks for starting this thread.

This solved my lack of 3G/HSDPA issues with my UK Orange HTC Hero, it was VERY frustrating, I though that orange were capping speeds!

Its really amazing now I think I had this issue for a few months now, and I forgot how quick my mobile data connection was!

Really helpful stuff, thanks...
