My wife and I bought two HTC Hero handsets

My wife's one originated from Europe (not sure which country)

while mine was from Malaysia

Is there any difference with what can be done with either of these handsets? (which ROM will work with either handset)

Thanks

If its rooted you can run any ROM you want to. But if not then you have to stick to the official updates from HTC.

It will be better, if you just let me know the Information about the handset from the 'About Menu' in Settings.

Hi Dr Dre

I have my Malyasian handset with me at work which I bought on Ebay earlier this week.

Looking at the 'about menu' it seems that the previous owner has already

rooted the rom... I think...??

here are the details

Model No: HTC Hero

Firmware version: 1.5

Baseband version: 63.18.55.06EU_6.35.06.18

Kernal Version: 2.6.27-mck-teknologist-1.9 root@neutrino

Build Number: MoDoCo Custom Rom 3.0 Core, SSH Password NeQTCW

Software Version: 1.0.0.A6288

Can you tell me what has been done to the phone by the previous owner? also is there further inhancements that you would recommend?

Can I return it to the original rom from Google if I wanted to?

Are you able to explain why the google maps Icon is missing altogether on my phone?

Thanks for your help

Firstly the previous owner has just flashed a Custom recovery image on the device and after that he has flashed a custom ROM on the device which is a MCR 3.0

Secondly If you talk of enhancements this is THE BEST Custom ROM right now, Yes! there is a new version of this ROM which is the 3.2 and a Radio ROM update as well.

Thirdly Yes! you can return it to the Stock OS which is from HTC, just by installing a RUU(ROM Update Utility) which you can find on the HTC Support Site.

and finally the previous owner must have uninstalled Google Maps from the ROM, when you will update your ROM to 3.2, It would be installed again.

Go Here for MCR 3.2 :-

And for Stock ROM's :-

It allows anyone on the same internet network as your phone to SSH into it, possibly stealing a lot of data. The chances of that happening are rather slim, but you'll want to change your password anyhow.

How? I don't know. :)

If you don't need secure shell access, simplest maybe just to remove it:

adb shell /system/removedropbear.sh

otherwise, change the password. It's stored in plaintext within /data/dropbear/passwd. Eg:

adb shell

echo "newpassword" > /data/dropbear/passwd

reboot

nb this will change the password, however settings->about will still display the old value, I think.

[Edit:] Ooh, I'm now regular :) Must be the bran flakes.

After couple of Reboots (1 to 2) it will display the new password.

Hi again Dr Dre

The next thing I want to try is installing the 3.2 Rom you mentioned above

Trouble is, I really have no idea what steps to follow...

(I have been trying to read up on what to do - but most instructions

are written as if I had a stock hero, which I no longer do...)

Is there a step by step for where I am at with my phone?

Thanks for your patience :P

- Download the Custom ROM according to your needs, and copy it to your SD card

- Enter the recovery image (if you're not in it already) by powering your phone with pressing 'Home+Power'

- Select 'Nandroid Backup' from the menu to do a backup

- If you want a fresh start then do a Wipe data/factory reset, Wipe Dalvik-cache or else proceed to the next step

- If you copied the custom rom as update.zip, select 'apply sdcard:update.zip', else select the option below.

- all done

There is no such big benefits of updating Radio ROM but if you are facing any problem with the connectivity of the phone then you can update, But on second thoughts you can update your Radio ROM, it will improve your battery life a BIT.

Hey zorm,

I have managed to change the password following your instructions

(It took me a while to sus out the ADB, but I pieced it together OK)

Thanks very much

Steve :(
