I guess this kinda helps us for the time being, thats only if these updates come out before the 2.1 update for us ( If it ever does :P )

Would be quite cool if we got the new maps, gmail, maybe even browser :(

The idea being that if there's an awesome new version of Gmail, you shouldn't be left behind because your carrier or phonemaker isn't on the ball with Android updates, as people languishing with Android 1.5 would tell you.

It would be much better if everyphone could run a latest stock android from google themselves and the phone providers/makers can add there own stuff.. That way every phone would be on the latest version.. Even if there wasnt enough room on the ROM, they could always remove apps and let them install on a SD, simple as that..

Nice idea but what they are proposing won't fix the issue..

I mean, all they are saying is that they will make versions of their new software (googles new software) to run on multiple OS versions.

That means that every app developer would have to do the same, not really a fixing anything.

Thanks for sharing though :P

Yes but it at least means that if Android gets new features it shouldn't be necessary to wait for your device manufacturer to upate to that version. Well ofc you will still have to have a device with the Froyo version of Android. They can't make it backwards compatible :(

Not much use to us since these features would only become available in a release which is even newer than 2.1 , which we are unsure if we will get anyway!
