is there a way back up without root?

Heya, I'm thinking about finally getting round to rooting my phone and was just wondering if there was anyway to back up my texts etc... before unlocking the bootloader(which does a factory reset)

I used wavesecure this weekend and it worked. backup via wavesecure > unlock (reset) > do any rom stuff > refresh your contacts from google > install your SMS app of choice > restore via wavesecure.
