Easiest way is to maintain 2 nandroid backups on the SDCARD and wipe/restore - takes 2 minutes tops... dont know of anything easier than that.

that sounds good... how do you manage your contacts, calls, applications, etc?

Applications, Titanium Backup

Contacts, surely they're in Google now?

Calls and texts I use Sprite Backup.

Android by far has the easiest system for switching ROM's, it's like the whole thing was designed for you to be able to do so. :P

if you do a nandroid backup, what is actually saved in the backup? Does it revert your phone to the exact state (apps, gallery restored)?

Yup, basically. Text messages, call logs etc.

Apps, depends on if you have Apss2SD I guess, but then you can backup ext too.
