Problem : Plugged phone up friday night nothing no beeb no sync no zippo.

So checked drivers restarted still nothing.

Re-installed active sync without spv connected, nothing.

Wiped windows reinstalled it then active synce, nothing.

Followed a guide by Paul on here in a forum about not having the spv connected etc etc.

Nothing.

Any idea's using XP Pro can use Win 98 or 2000 Pro but I have had it working before now und XP Pro.

What is the exect procedure for installing the active sync? can the cradle be installed? etc etc.

Tried downloading the version 3.6 from M.S site still no luck.

Have registered the problem with orange got circulated to level 2 tech support!!!!

No idea said they would have to take my details and get a specialist to call me this was at 9:30am today still nothing do Orange genuinly not have a clue about their own product or are they stalling because aparantly they have not kept enough 'claw-back' stock for replacement models that may be needed, I understand that companies have procedures with regards to replacing items but a cable is pretty much bottom line figures really.

I have been with orange for nealry 8 years now never had an unresolved problem yet.

Not really p*ssed more amused to be honest that they release a product without preping staff or getting stuff sorted first.

So while I'm waiting can anyone help?

In Device Manager under XP, (Administrative Tools, Computer Management), do you have the SPV listed? (Can't remember the exact item name!)

Do your USB ports definitely work?

My method:

Plug the cradle only into a USB port

Install active sync

Plug in phone

Ignore XP trying to be useful.

Sorted...

The SPV is listed as an HTC (High Tech Computers?) USB Sync.

The most common error I get with people installing Active Sync devices (I install about 3 iPAQ's a day) is that people plug them straight into their PC as soon as it comes out the box and then realise there's a sticker on it saying install software first.

The nature of USB is that Windows will always try and install the device and assume it has the correct drivers. If Active Sync isn't installed when this happens, then the drivers aren't present and Windows will install an unknown device. Uninstalling and reinstalling ActiveSync won't do anything because the device is resedent in the system now.

The quickest way to remove the device from the system is to go into Control Panel/System/Hardware/Device manager, open up the Windows CE USB group and delete the HTC USB sync device (The device HAS to be plugged into the PC otherwise this device won't be listed). Once this has happened, reinstall ActiveSync and reboot....then during the bootup, Windows should find your device, plus driver and install it. If it doesn't find the phone, go back into device manager, right click the USB group and selec Scan for Hardware Changes and this should do it.

Failing that, plug it into another USB socket and see if Windows starts installing it there....oh, and reboot the phone once as well to be on the safe side.

I had similar problems when I first installed cradle/active sync, could not phone and pc to link. I also followed reinstall guides but same result. Tracked it down to my firewall blocking conection.

ps thanks to all posting at Modaco, made life alot easier.

Your Firewall blocks access to hardware on your PC? You sure??

What firewall are you using? I've never come across that!

Yep i had a similar problem, it was Zone alarm blocking the phones IP.

Activesync uses RAS to make a connection between the phone/host so the IP bridge looks like incoming traffic to some firewalls.

I had a different problem when I first got the phone. I tracked it down to the fact I was using a USB hub but did not have it set to self powered. When I powered the USB hub it started working.

Tried all of the above still nothing.

My USB definately works as my speakers and Keyboard and mouse work from it.

Also tried plugging cradle into keyboard still zippo, think my cradle is a duffer.

Thanks very much anyway guys much appreciated.

Back to orange ;-)

I woz gonna say that....seems unlikely, USB speakers.

And damn, how many USB sockets do you have? Are you using a hub?

One thing to check, is the device actually listed in the device manager??

I have a half dozen usb devices or so, but thats mostly because most higher end keyboards and mice seems to come as USB as standard, having said that my USB keyboard has a built in hub ;)

The device is not recognised in device manager although plugging it in under the mac operating system it sees it as an unsupported device, so now I'm not sure if its the phone or the cradle!!!

I have hard reset my phone too! (Didn't need a guide quite simple if you think about it)

USB...

USB Speakers = Harmon Kardon Soundsticks and iSub see....

http://themacsmith.com/soundstick.html

USB Keyboard has two usb ports on it.

CPU has 2 usb ports on it.

But yes I do need a USB hub as I have 6 USB devices.

Update Spoke to a Secon Line Data Support guy late last night ran through with me over the phone every possible aspect he was completely stumped.

Filed a report saying that either my phone or cradle was faulty.

I have to call back a different option where someone will decide the next course of action.

Thanks Guys Again
