Questions about flashing SPL on Nexus One

I've been told there's no reason to flash the SPL on your Nexus One, and it is one of the ways you can actually brick your phone for real (if you pull the battery or somethin)

But I have a serious problem. I've wiped/factory reset my phone but I can't seem to boot the actual OS past the Androids on Skateboards screen.

I can enter the recovery menu and I've tried wiping and flashing cyanogen and HTC Desire (I was originally running the desire rom when this all happened I was able to boot it once after this problem started)

EDIT:: correction, I have been able to boot up fully twice, once randomly to the desire ROM and once when I wiped and reflashed everything to stock, I since rebooted and it wen back to bootloader every time, tried replicating this successful bootup but nothing happens when I wipe and again reflash the factory setup.

It seems like there is some trigger set on the NVFlash (the SPL perhaps?) that prevents it from booting past the Androids on Skateboards screen. Now I my be blowing wind up everyone's noses and either I don't understand this or I'm doing something wrong.

Is there a safe way to flash the SPL on the Nexus One...and a file I can use? Also, is this really how I should be fixing my phone or is there something else I can try? Any and all help is very much appreciated. (Don't want my $550 going down the drain a week after purchase ;-) )

EDIT:: I noticed hboot_8x50_0.33.0012_091210.nb0 in the restore to factory image fastboot zip, is this what I need to flash or is it included in the other .img files?

EDIT:: managed to replicate a full boot but only into SAFE mode by using fastboot to reboot the device ex: fastboot-windows reboot but this is the ONLY way I can boot up my device normally

There is a file out there called alpha2boot.img that will fix the stuck boot. You will need to flash it to your phone.

If you check Google you can find a forum or two out.there where they discuss this stuck boot and link to the file.

This file should become available here as a sticky.

This unfortunately didn't do the trick the best luck I had was wiping the handset and formatting the stock OS it booted up once when i rebooted I got the androids on skateboards screen again....

which brings me back to my original question..my phone must be stuck in some sort of state, because the phone boots immediately to the bootloader.

Would flashing the SPL perhaps fix this? and if so how do I do that on the nexus one?
