HTC Dilemma

I wasn't sure where to post this so admin feel free to move it.

My dilemma:

I've been hoping to get a new phone for a while. Currently using a Nokia 6500 Slide for (unlimited texts 400 free minutes for only £13 a month), which is quite a bog standard phone and I felt it time for a change when my contract with Orange ended. I have been offered the HTC Desire as an upgrade at a fantastic monthly rate (Orange don't do the HTC Legend which I liked more) and the HTC Legend from Vodafone. My problem I'm not sure which one to go for.

I'll only really use a phone for texting, emailing, internet use, GPS and games and emergency calls.

I like the Legend as it's aesthetically more pleasing to look at. It's also slightly smaller which again I prefer for "pocketability". But having read many reviews it would seem the Desire is definitely the better phone with the bigger better screen and the more powerful engine.

In addition to the above Vodafone offered me the Legend, (unlimited texts and internet and 300 free minutes for only £20 a month, no handset fee).

I phoned Orange to cut off my line and they offered me the Desire (unlimited texts and internet and 200 free minutes for only £15 a month, no handset fee).

Staying with Orange would mean I can keep my phone number.

As you might imagine I've been offered some great deals but have to make a decision. Can someone with a little bit of experience give me some advice or feedback to help me make up my mind on which one to choose?

P.s. I tried searching the forum for both devices but am struggling to get any hits, perhaps these devices are known by different names outwith the UK or Europe?

Dunno if you wanted your 2nd post deleted, or the thread(meaning you dont want responses), but heres my 2 cents.

I'm also in a similar dilemma over the two devices.

For me it boiled down to the overall experience of the product. Although the Legend looks fantastic, it seems too much like a Hero(my current phone) v1.5, which isn't a bad thing but I don't think it will stand the test of time. The new "range" of smartphones seem to be leaning over to that 1GHz spec, and any new phone coming out under that seems a little sub-par. Reviewers say it runs without lagg and has very good performance, but I think once you get some background apps running and start some multitasking it won't favour that well against the Desire.

So although the aesthetic of the Desire is pretty bland and won't wow your friends, it's bigger screen and faster processor should make those tasks that the Hero never quite handled well enough, a breeze. I've read a few in-depth posts about why the Desire's AMOLED screen is a bit hit-or-miss with "pinky" highlights, but it seems simple enough to send back for a replacement. The Legend suffers the same fate as far as I know, but not to such an extent. It seems to be a subliminal problem anyway, comparative to audiophiles loving their bit-rates.

I still change decisions every-day between the two, but I think I'm honing in on the Desire now. It's bigger screen and superior processor should hopefully make texting a lot easier, browsing the internet also has the plus benefit of Flash.

I think I'll get used to the Desire's looks and feel. I used to think it was rather horrid looking, but the more I see it the more I see the simple "uninteresting" design it has. It's not horrible, its just a little dull.

You should be able to keep your Orange phone number, just ask them for your PAC. It's a pretty common question.

It's a little annoying as I live on a small island with no major shops to speak, with the closest mobile phone reseller being a 14 hour ferry journey away. I've been toiling over this decision for about a week now. I hope I don't make the wrong decision! If I were you I'd ask to try out the two and decide after a hands-on with it.

Even after I convince myself with all these valid points, I always come back to the same point, "There is just something about an aluminum body that makes it feel and look premium." And I keep looping this process. I wanted some opinions too ;)

I wanted the post deleted as I realised this was the WinMo and not the Android section of Modaco. I posted the same question in there and forgot to come back and check this post. Having said that I'd like to thank you for the reply as it is interesting to hear someone else's view on the subject.

Ultimately I made my decision a few days a go and opted for the Desire due to the power and the bigger screen and am so glad i did so. The phone is, much to my surprise fantastic in every way possible. I thought it might look dull but it feels and looks real quality.

If you haven't made you mind up get, go for the Desire you won't regret it. Oh and post in the Android section. ;)
