I just played with the Legend and Desire - Hero MoDaCo still rocks!

I've just got back from the Gadget Show Live at the NEC and was able to spend some time with both the Legend and Desire - I have to say that neither has left me feeling a need to replace my Hero. Sure the Desire has a better screen, but all three people with me agreed that my Hero running MoDaCo 3.2 was just as smooth/lag free if not slightly smoother than the Desire when scrolling apps/homescreens - this was really surprising when you look at the processor specs and the fact that my Hero was loaded with apps and backround processes that weren't on the newer phone. The Legend was also no improvement over MoDaCo 3.2 and whilst the new metallic finish makes a nice change, it didn't feel a step up in build quality over the Teflon Hero finish, just different.

I just hope 2.1 is not impairing the performance of the new phones, otherwise Paul will be back to the drawing board in cooking a 2.1 Hero ROM as good as 3.2 is at the moment.

Yes! he does, he's just waiting for the official ROM to come out.

lol... it can only be so smooth scrolling apps or across homescreen, overclock the Snapdragon to 2Ghz you still won't find scrolling a lot faster. Try loading a webpage or runs an app that work the processor a little more, and you will notice the difference.

Yes! Nexus One MUST be faster it has no Sense ;-) The Scrolling Speed is from Spare Parts in Modaco ;-) Start an app or an Game u will see the difference ;-) Just play Raging Thunder 2 on both phones ;-)

peace

Yes I know this would be the case - however when the Hero was accused of having lag last year (and the update released from HTC), the first thing people refered to was the scrolling of homescreens/apps - I even remember videos showing nothing but scrolling pre and post update. The speed of the HTC sense interface has to be the first point of comparison between HTC Android phones or why not just get a Nexus one?

I know that spare parts etc in MoDaCo contribute to the smoothness of scrolling on the Hero, but I kind of thought that the Desire and Legend fell at the 1st hurdle for me in not being able to at least be equal to my Hero. However much faster browsing, games etc will be, I did expect a totally smooth sense experience and that wasn't the case. That along with the fact that I felt the newer form factors were evolution rather than revolution I simply didn't feel any compelling urgency to upgrade.

I do wonder if a fairer comparison would be stock Hero versus stock Desire? i.e. MCR Hero versus MCR Desire ;)

Perhaps HTC have just not done a good job optimising for the Desire, just like they didn't for the Hero...

I'd already dediced that, once I get 2.1 on the Hero, there's not enough hardware diffs to justify the spend and so will stick with my Hero for now. So was pleased to read this thread ;)

Yes I think you are basically agreeing with my initial observation - that a stock Desire even with it's high spec still doesn't completely walk over a Hero with a custom ROM like Paul's - I would have expected it to be in a different league regardless of ROM - and scrolling the sense interface would be the first thing that would be noticeably superior.
