Is there an easier way to change the bootsplash?

I'm having a bit of trouble getting Fastboot to work (waiting for device), which is one of the steps for flashing a custom bootsplash over the Acer and Android splashes.

The next thing I'm going to try (rip out and reinstall the USB drivers) is a bit of a chore for just simply changing the boot splash, so before I do anything in vain - is there no other way to change the boot splash?

Incidentally, what about disabling one or both of the boot splashes entirely? Is this possible, or are those part of the boot process? (Googled it, no mention whatsoever.)

(In WM I could just simply copypasta over a single, specific-named file to change the splash... )

NOTE: NOT BOOT ANIMATION, I've successfully changed that before - tho I liked the custom ROM's energy star thingie and have went back to it.
