[The Ringtones...Bug?] non-updating sdcard folders

For inserting custom ringtones into my Liquid, I've followed a tutorial which had me create the following folders in the root of my sd card:

/ringtones/ (ringtones go here)

/alarms/ (alarm goes here)

/notifications/ (notifications go here)

It worked the first time I did it - the ringtones and notifications appeared in the respective settings menus. Then a few days later I decided to add another ringtone to the ringtones folder.

The new ringtone didn't appear.

Rebooted.

The new ringtone didn't appear.

Deleted an unused ringtone from the folder just in case. Rebooted.

The unused ringtone is still listed! (but selecting it naturally does nothing)

The new ringtone is still not there.

All other unchanged ringtones work.

I have confirmed that the ringtones have NOT been copied to system/media/audio on my cellphone.

I have deleted/renamed the ringtones. alarms and notifications folders - but the ringtones listed in the system do not change! (and, they do nothing, since they're in the wrong folder)

Here I found out that the issue extends to the notifications and alarms folders also.

The only way to even get those ruddy lists to change is to remove the SD card, which will cause Android to list only in-phone tracks. Removing and reinserting the SD card does not resolve this.

I've googled this issue and it seems I'm not the only one who've been struck. It seems to go all the way back to 2008.

Using Evil D:'s ROM on my Acer Liquid, ver 2.0001, although I think that doesn't matter, since, once again, I don't seem to be the only one with this problem.

None of my searches have turned up a working solution, not even creating another media/audio/folder tree inside the sdcard works.

Is there some initialization text file that I missed? Some XML file I can trash to reset the autodetection? I see no indication of anything in the root of my SDcard...

Just an additional note:

Aside from Handcent, I'm not using anything that alters where the system searches for Ringtones and such. Handcent doesn't seem to be causing the problems either.

Well, I grabbed Ringdroid and that managed to remove the rogue entires (as well as the duplicates I've suddenly found myself with). Tho now the folder trick no longer works, I have to add my rings manually. Ah well.

No responses too. I really don't believe you want to give iPhone, WM and dumbphone guys ammunition to diss Android now, do you? >_>
