Might not be old as firmware versions are different from carrier to carrier

if you look at the htc website the last updates stats "The new software number after the update will be 1.15.405.4 for an HTC phone.

1.15.110.11 on T-Mobile"

i thinks theres only 1 firmware update out anyways for the desire regardless of carrier

Are those software versions after the OTA update or before?

I'm asking this because my HTC Desire was shipped with the same software as yours.

It was purchased from Orange Romania and it's network-locked to orange unfortunately.

How about yours? Is it network-locked to Virgin too?

x.xx.405.x is generic WWE and should be SIM-free and unlocked (mine was and is fine)

Not everybody is as lucky as you are; mine was 1.15.405.4 and DAMN network-locked with Orange Romania.

And even worse, I bought unlock codes from like a dozen websites: none of them could provide the correct unlock code so far.

I rooted it just fine (and too easy, I might say), even installed a few custom ROMs, but no luck with unlocking it yet... :)

Funny, because I unlocked mine no issues...I did have to borrow a SIM card from the Mrs as it wouldn't unlock with mine no matter how I tried (Orange UK)
