Acer Liquid Turns Off By Itself

Hi All

I'm not sure if this is the correct forum or even site to be posting about issues/problems, but it seems pretty popular so I thought I'd give it a shot.

One week ago I bought a new unlocked Acer Liquid S100 / A1 (running standard OS Donut 1.6) off of eBay and I'm already experiencing problems with it. In short, the phone turns off by itself several times per day, whether it is in a pocket, bag, or just sitting on the table. The battery definitely has plenty of charge remaining (per the battery indicator icon, time of use, and a percentage battery life widget I installed from Marketplace) when this happens, although it does seem to happen more when the battery life nears about 50%. The battery itself seems to fit well (i.e., not loose or moving around) and the battery contacts appear clean and undamaged. I am using it on an AT&T 3G connection (HSDPA 850, 1900 bands) in the United States; the eBay store (ac-electronic , eBay seller ID mobile-tone) suggested the problem might be because it is an HSDPA 1900 / 2100 phone, but I'm very skeptical. After all, 1900 band is common to both.

I tried a hard reset / clean boot and it didn't help. One thing to note is that it never happens when it is plugged in and charging. Acer Support told me to ask my point of sale for help, but the seller is no help. The seller's policy is that the buyer is responsible for shipping (approx US$70 each way) for any returns or exchanges.

Due to the relatively recent release and limited availability of the product, I realize this post is a long shot, but I'd be very grateful for any advice or solutions offered.

Regards,

SRags

hmm

if you dont want to send it back to sender for help

you can try a new battery

another long shot no doubt

but you say it happens more often on lower battery levels, and doesnt happen on full charge

a new battery will set you back about $20. There are extended batteries that give you a little more capacity (labeled 2000mAh, but really about 1500mAh, original is 1350mAh)

Don't believe the guy who tells you its because of the 1900/2100 hsdpa bands. That's a clear sign that they are deflecting b/c the response is so ridiculous. I'm using the same phone on ATT 1900 3g band and it goes back and forth b/w 3g 1900 and 2g 1900/850 on my train ride and it surely doesn't cause the phone to reboot. If they claim that's a likely reason, that means they sold you a defective phone and are trying to avoid responsibility for it.

I used to have a similar problem with an HTC Kaiser I used to have. I bought it used and then bought an extended battery. The battery looked and was advertised as the correct size, but it was actually a millimeter too small and every once in a while the contacts would disconnect and the phone would reboot. I thought it was a hardware problem until I made a snugger fit with some duct tape around the battery. Well, I never had the problem again. So, I'd check to make sure the battery is completely secure. If its not the battery, then try reflashing a stock donut rom. If it still happens, impose your will on that seller because he/she sold you a defective phone and likely knew it was defective too (you can usually tell when they give you a BS reason why the phone might be messing up).

Good luck.

YEAHHH, regular status woot woot!!!

Please give us more details about rom and kernel you use. I suspect the phone you bought is rooted and the guy you bought from has flashed custom kernel to run at higher CPU rate, i.e. disc0's kernel at 1Ghz or 940Mhz.

I have restarts with 1Ghz kernel when I tried it. 940's is stable enough.

I had this problem with the 0.008.06 BIN and live wallpapers. It switched off itself by night. When removed the live wallpaper it was good. Also sometimes the phone crashes. With the old firmware there was not problem. So probably if you flash an original ROM it will be good.

I noticed these problems with 1.6 or 2.1 and seemed to be related to use 2G when phone works on 3G I have no issues. I was worried but seem that setting phone to "2G only" was the cause for my problems. Could be related to the radio firmware but donut or new eclair seemed to have the same problem for me.

I bought a brand new phone from store and faced the same problem .

after frustrating first week i was able to nail the problem to software issue .

there are some apps that are available in market that make the phone reboot , couple of them i know that are giving problems on my phone are network monitor and handcent sms.

I would suggest you flash your phone with stock rom provided by acer. in my case i am using OS_Acer_liquid_2.000.25_AAP_SGP and very happy with it now.

before you reflash the phone try and remove all third party apps from your phone and see if you still face the problem

Settings - > Applications - > Manage Applications-> then click the menu key "||||" - > Filters - > third-party

now remove everything in the list

Agree, also some apps make phone reboot. Noticed with old version of Fring before when it run in background. Doing a wipe cache and data from malez recovery also helped.

Seems like it is software issue, as when I clean everything there are no issues. I think this Android phone is not super stable. As changing stuff like 3G to 2G or using some apps can make it really unstable.

@SRags

my wild guess, you may have to replace the battery. in some way it hints of corruption. ;)

and the HSDPA 1900 / 2100 stuff seems sceptical, for i have been using the phone with both 3G/HSDPA and 2G/EDGE yet so far no such self-off happened.

Boy are we screw! I just had the same problem today, drop the phone 2 feet high on a carpet, and now froze up alots, and the ear jack seem to mess up too.

Had it for 2 month, work well with no problem till today, after normal reset or hard reset, and don't matter how many time I do it.

It keep freezing and or reboot constantly after 3-10 minute. Never hack/mod/etc. to the Acer Liquid....

Sending help letter to Acer now, hoping to get it send in for repair.

Had suddenly the same kind of problem the last 2 days, but I didn't install anything new ... I just changed my language from French to English and back to French.

Phone was keeping rebooting.

I saw on another forum that some apps could cause reboots, like Handcent SMS.

I uninstalled it, switch back to French and no more reboot ...

Strange thing is that my phone was working perfectly with Handcent SMS before that.

LCR1.4

Baseband 03.12.01

kernel 2.6.29

I have just the same issue with my Liquid E. I have LCR 1.8.0.1 Rom and malez recovery 0.5.4. So the phone works quite well, but it turns off instantly, always from sleep. Now i think of installing the official OS_Acer_2.100.07.EMEA.GEN1_A21E_A ROM. May be i should try something else? What about new LCR version? I will be very grateful for any piece of advice.

I used to have this problem and deduced it was because of Wifi.

I do not have a data plan, so I rarely use 3G/2G, I almost always use Wifi.

I had an app from the market: Y5 Battery Saver. I removed the app and switched to manual wifi mode.

I now have 48 hours of battery life and no crashes at all.

Hope this helps, somehow...
