Firstly to answer one of your questions, as long as you are using custom roms found here or xda for example your phone wont get 're-locked' to orange. Since there are many tutorials on how to flash a new rom I won't go into details, but you should first flash what's called a recovery image. Which is essentially "rooting" the device. RA_hero is pretty much what everyone uses now as opposed to cyanogen 1.4. Then from there you can flash any rom you like for your hero. Be sure to do nandroid backups before flashing in case the s*** hits the fan. Here is a video on how-to flash the RA-hero recovery image And a vid for flashing a rom. Take care, I searched the videos very quickly so maybe outdated.
Guest Beast200 Posted April 27, 2010 Report Posted April 27, 2010 i thanks for links have tried the better Terminal Emulater (Reminds me of the good of MS dos) method but seem to get -c: permission denied when i enter su to access root is it because the kernel is too new ie 2.6.27-430d1aea and build nr 2.73.61.66 cl#82177 can i use the last offical version for the non braned phones with out the phone been re locked cheers mark
Guest zorm Posted April 27, 2010 Report Posted April 27, 2010 Firstly to answer one of your questions, as long as you are using custom roms found here or xda for example your phone wont get 're-locked' to orange. Flashing ROMs, official or custom, has no effect on sim lock status. You are confusing root status with sim lock status.
Guest zorm Posted April 27, 2010 Report Posted April 27, 2010 have tried the better Terminal Emulater (Reminds me of the good of MS dos) method but seem to get -c: permission denied when i enter su to access root is it because the kernel is too new ie 2.6.27-430d1aea and build nr 2.73.61.66 cl#82177 If the custom ROM you're referring to is MCR (MoDaCo Custom ROM) 3.2 from Paul, it is based on Android 1.5, with a stable fast kernel. You can't su atm because by default the user can't get root access; that's why there are lots of threads describing in detail what you need to do to get root access. Try some of the guides. This one from theunlockr.com is good. I think from 2.73.61.66 you'll first need to use a gold card to downgrade, but I'm not 100% certain so just follow the guide (it will tell you to try a certain method & if that fails use a gold card to downgrade & then apply the original method). The rooting process described, once complete, will install a Recovery image from which you can backup your phone & flash new ROMs. Once you choose a custom ROM, such as MCR 3.2, & install it, you will have root access.
