As has been said many times before in this thread, you need to burn the ISO and boot it up as in a Virtual Machine it causes problems.

Thanks a lot for answering so fast, I try this right now and let you know.

Thanks again and sorry for not having found this response in the topic...

Hi, I tried the root via TinyCoreLinux but get only the following error in Step1:

Any idea?

Desire Root Step 1

Erasing cache and rebooting in RUU mode ...

erasing 'cache' ... OKAY

... OKAY

error: cannot load 'testimage.zip'

error: cannot load 'testimage.zip'

Rebooting to bootloader ...

rebooting into bootloader ... OKAY

Step 1 complete - now use the bootloader menu to enterrecovery mode.

thats what i cant get past driving me nuts

Paul thank you so much for such a great work....

I successfully rooted my Desire and also Flashed the Chinese Input (HTC_CIME) , I can see the chinese input setting under Language & Keyboard but things is I don't see a way to actually switch the input language to Chinese when I'm typing, is that anything I miss?

After a day playing i have some problems:

I lost my normal screen with dig clock and wether. Also background was lost and could not connect to teh computer anymore, the USB logo in the top of the screen did not come up.

I did the whole thing (rooting) again and all is well again. Anyone?

I was hoping to use 'backup for root users' as i did in my Magic. The progran starts and let me make a choice what to backup. It is making a folder on SD card but... nothing there? So not realy root? Ore is there an other issue here?

Also i miss FLAC music suport. My magic did the trick after rooting but my Desire is not...

I am intrested to understand how to get it working or why it is not...?

Try re-burning the ISO maybe?

YES - that was the problem. With a re-burned ISO it worked well - my Desire now is rooted and debranded!

Thanx a lot!

Phew!.... Done it

Cheers Paul.

Had to use some extra info to make the gold card, and needed to use my little EEEPC as the Tiny distro wouldnt load on my main (old) laptop for some reason, plus Ive no finger nails left, but alls well that ends well.

Thanks to all for posting your problems / experiences, they do give much needed help.

A kitchen that has the same options like the kitchen for the Desire rom for the Nexus One would be sweet.

Every time I run recovery-windows.bat I get a "device not found" error. Any ideas?

More informations are needed in order to answer such a question. What operating system are you using? How the Desire il connected to the computer (which port, via HUB or directly, which cable, and so on)? Have you tried to manually issue some adb commands to your Desire?

I tried doing the root but get some problems at stage 2.

Here is what I get:

tc@box:/mnt/cdrom/root$ sudo ./step2.sh
Desire Root Step 2

Pushing required files to the device...

error: device not found
error: device not found

Pushing update file to device sdcard - this may take a few minutes...

error: device not found
error: device not found

Now wipe and apply rootedupdate.zip from the recovery image menu.

error: device not found[/codebox]

Why is it saying device not found? I am not booting up through the CD not through a Virtual Machine and step1 ran ok so I don't see why it says device not found when I am at the screen with the phone and the ! on.

Any help would be great!

Is that on Tiny Core Linux or the phone?

I'm booting it up through the CD not in a Virtual Machine if that's what you're talking about.
