Guest peterx666 Posted April 29, 2010 Report Posted April 29, 2010 There seems to be loads of Text to speech applications (with patchy results, and I can read anyway, so cant see the point) but nowhere can I find a Reliable Speech to Text Application I want to be able to make notes with speech and have them stored as text to read later I saw a phone (thing it was a google phone) on the Gadget show and John Bentley spoke into it and it reliably translated his speech (speaking at full speed) into text - thought is was great - anyone any idea what it was? Want it!!!! Anyone any ideas - looked on Marketplace with no joy any suggestions appreciated - preferably from someone who has tried it out Thanks Pete  :P
Guest audiobastard Posted April 29, 2010 Report Posted April 29, 2010 (edited) There seems to be loads of Text to speech applications (with patchy results, and I can read anyway, so cant see the point) but nowhere can I find a Reliable Speech to Text Application I want to be able to make notes with speech and have them stored as text to read later I saw a phone (thing it was a google phone) on the Gadget show and John Bentley spoke into it and it reliably translated his speech (speaking at full speed) into text - thought is was great - anyone any idea what it was? Want it!!!! Anyone any ideas - looked on Marketplace with no joy any suggestions appreciated - preferably from someone who has tried it out Thanks Pete  :P Need more information: E.g what version of android are you on. IF its 1.6, voice input can be done but the transcription is not as good as in 2.1, so you have to talk relatively loud into the microphone. For 1.6, you can install angio's 1.5.1 rom and that has voice search. Then you need to install the HTC IME r.20 keyboard. Its on xda somewhere I think in the magic forums or hero... google will find it for you if you ask nicely. I'm not sure what the latest version is but its supposed to work on android 1.6. Then you need to activate the touch input keyboard in keybaord (language/text) settings. It will be there after you install the htc ime keyboard. Once you've done that, next time you open a text field to type in or you can just bring up the keybaord by longpressing menu key at homescreen, you hold down the lower left key (i believe its the switch to numbers view button) on the keyboard and choose touch input as your default keyboard. Now you have a microphone icon next to the keyboard that will do voice input anywhere... JUST LIKE ON TV lol. For 2.1 -- if you're using for example that 1.004 2.1 bin, the LCR 1.2.4 rom has voice input preinstalled in the standard android keyboard. It is very accurate, but won't be perfect b/c you speak broken english or have nazi accent. don't lie, I know you do, its ok, i won't judge you. For the 2.1 bins of .008 or .010 variety, you need to follow the same steps as 1.6. You may also need to install the voiceinput apk if the rom you install doesn't have a voice search app. I believe the stock bin requires the voice input apk, but the roms already have it. Some roms already come with the htc ime voice search keyboard installed already. If you don't have touch input available as an option in the keyboard language settings, then you need to install htc ime. -- install voice input apk first, then the htc ime keyboard. I put up a link to the voicesearch and keybaord apk up here somewhere. I think its in the evilD: 2.2 rom thread. Just search voice input on that thread and one of my posts will come up where I put up the links. So, in summary, depending on what rom your running you may need to install voice input apk and htc ime keyboard. Voice input apk will not install on android 1.6 and its derivative roms, only on the 2.1 varieties. But if it has voice search, htc ime will work, just not as good on 1.6 as 2.1. I should ask for donations with this long ass response. I had been trying to make voice input work on 1.6 as accurately as on 2.1 and it just doesn't work as well. It still works, but you gotta talk loudly into the microphone b/c it doesn't seem to hear the voice as well. IF there was a setting to increase the mic recording volume in 1.6, it would probably be as accuarate as in 2.1. Enjoy. I decided to just put up the links for you. One caveat.... in 2.1, if you install the voice search with keybaord apk because you are using a stock bin w/out voice search already installed, then the stock android keyboard will force close after typing 2 letters. That is why you need to install the HTC IME keyboard and use that instead. Links below. Voice Search with Keybaord apkDL IT HERE HTC IME keyboard DL IT HERE Edited April 29, 2010 by audiobastard
Guest peterx666 Posted April 29, 2010 Report Posted April 29, 2010 Wow! thanks for that comprehensive rundown This ROM business is beyond me so it looks as if the best thing to do is to wait for 2.1 (as I am on 1.6 Now) whenever it comes out???? But in the marketplace cant even find an App that tries to do voice to text - is there one?? Pete

But in the marketplace cant even find an App that tries to do voice to text - is there one?? Pete :P on 1.6 stock you cannot use voice input (voice to text) unless it also has voice search installed. If you have a little microphone up at the search bar on your homescreen, then you can just install HTC IME and you'll have it. But, If there's no mic there, it won't work. Put some hair on your chest and flash a new rom already. JK  you might be able to try betterkeyboard, but I'm pretty sure it won't work either w/out the voice search apk installed. Only reason my response was so detailed is that I had asked that same question a few times and no one ever responded.
Guest wulltd Posted May 2, 2010 Report Posted May 2, 2010 You can try 'simplenote', it records speech and turns it into a note for the homescreen!
Guest js.2005 Posted August 19, 2010 Report Posted August 19, 2010 My lord Audiobastard, your post is the reason I am absolutely keeping the Pulse Mini I bought a few days ago. Who cares about lousy touchscreen keyboards (not the phone's fault, I just don't like touch keyboards full stop) when you can use THIS...?! Thanks so much for the information! PS I don't suppose you can tell me how to make it stop replacing swearwords with #####s? Being Irish, this is a major inconvenience for me... :D
