3G Issue with 3.2 ROM

I'm sure I'm overlooking something, and something has changed since 3.1, but it's something that's really bugging me.

Since I installed the 3.2 ROM, my phone will only connect to 2G internet (e.g. EDGE and below).

I know in the previous ROMs there was an option to use 2G networks only within the Network Settings in options, but that doesn't seem to be there anymore.

Now I'm stuck with a 2G connection and I'm not sure how to get back to 3G, is there an option somewhere to switch this back on??

Thanks to anyone that can help

MCR 3.2 is based on a 3 ROM. Since they don't have a 2G network, their ROM doesn't offer a means to switch. I assume your phone must have been configured for 2G only when you flashed MCR 3.2.

A couple of easy ways to switch back to 3G. Install a suitable widget - try searching the market for 3g. Alternatively, dial *#*#4636#*#* & select the appropriate option. It should be in the first drop down menu you're presented with under phone info.

Thank you very much, that seems to have got me back onto 3G :-)

What was the option?

I seem to be only able to connect to EDGE and GPRS.

Dial *#*#4636#*#* & go to Phone Info ->Set preferred network type. It's a drop down menu offering four options: WCDMA preferred; GSM only, WCDMA only & Unknown. You want one of the WCDMA options; mine is set to WCDMA preferred, by default.

The whole host of mobile telecoms standards are pretty confusing as lots of different terms are in common use & some overlap. The above Wikipedia link summarises them in the table at page end. EDGE & GPRS are both GSM standards which in the overall history makes them 2G transitional technology. WCDMA is a UMTS standard which makes it 3G technology. Incidentally HSDPA is 3G transitional tech.

Since my connection seems to alternate between HSDPA & 3G, I assume the WCDMA menu options actually map to WCDMA or better. Certainly WCDMA preferred does, as that's what my device is set to & it currently has an HSDPA connection.
