Speed on the Desire ROM

Is there a way to make the Desire ROM a bit snappier? LIke I know Cyanogen's ROM is a lot faster (I hear that is because of the kernel?). Is there like a kernel or something that I can flash onto it to make it a bit faster, snappier, more responsive? Also, is there a way to somehow merge the two ROMs?
