Guest ErezS Posted May 2, 2010 Report Posted May 2, 2010 Hey! just got my Htc Desire from Clove and it's amazing! It's my first Android based phone ( after 2 and half years with iPhone 2G). I'm from Israel so I need the Hebrew fonts. My question is , as my phone is unlocked and unbranded AFAIK Do I need a goldcard in order to root ? Also , is there a way to reinstall the stock ROM(I hope I have the terminology correct) if I don't like the behavior of the custom ROM? Thank you and sorry for the newbie questions. Erez
Guest Snarkasm Posted May 3, 2010 Report Posted May 3, 2010 If you try to flash a ROM and it fails with a customer (or custom) ID error, then you need a Goldcard. If it doesn't fail, you don't. You will not brick your phone if you try to flash without a GC and you need one. The ROM Paul includes in his root method is nothing but a rooted stock ROM, so it should be the same experience you had previously, but with the ability to grant superuser permissions. Otherwise, it's identical. If you want to go back to un-root, you need to flash an HTC-produced ROM. Again, the ROM Paul includes is identical to stock. You'll only start getting different behavior if you install Cyanogenmods or ROMs from other chefs.

Have a look at this tutorial on here from afiorillo: Click It says...... "a goldcard is needed only if your Desire comes from a Telco operator (T-Mobile, Orange, Vodafone and so on), in any other case a spare MicroSD will be sufficient"

Erez You probably won't need a goldcard. To get back to stock just follow my unroot guide here.
Guest ErezS Posted May 3, 2010 Report Posted May 3, 2010 Thanks guys! Successfully rooted the desire.
Guest lazyeejay Posted May 9, 2010 Report Posted May 9, 2010 (edited) Hi, Ive got an Orange Desire and Ive read all the instructions and followed to the letter and mine starts ok, then it updates the radio then sends then says there is an error that it cannot update :P . Im pretty sure I have done it all correctly. I have used 2 sd cards and am kinda stuck now. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. I have got another card floating around but I would have thought one of the others should have worked, also phone was in sync mode. Please help as I want to get this orange nastiness off.
