Guest StuMcBill Posted May 2, 2010 Report Posted May 2, 2010 (edited) Just wondering what everyone's tips for saving battery are, I am struggling to get a full days use at the moment, but that may just be because its new and I haven't actually put it down yet :-) I have juicedefender installed, but I haven't had it long enough to see if it makes a difference. I haven't rooted my phone yet, but I think I will once an undervolted kernel becomes available (assuming this is possible, Paul??) I have set all my syncs to approx 4 hours, again to try and save on battery life. Does anyone else have any good tips they can share? Stewart Edit, what's the calendar issue I have read about, anything I should do about that? Edited May 2, 2010 by StuMcBill
Guest Snarkasm Posted May 2, 2010 Report Posted May 2, 2010 Turn off wifi if you're outside a place where you use it. Turn off 3G/HSDPA (use APNdroid) if you're by wifi. Turn off GPS always. Those three things are the biggest killer, wifi outside of known networks in particular. If it's on and doesn't know where it's connecting, it scans for networks constantly.

If you go to the CyanogemMOD after rooting your phone, there are tips on XDA. There are at least 3 UV kernels for CM. Not sure about Paul's build which is now at r14. On CM 5.0.6; I've done the following: Turn of GPS as suggestedTurn off wifi as suggested when not in use Turn off 3G when not in useInstall setCPU and set a profileTurn off mail sync'ingInstall a UV kernel With these things, as a completely subjective example on CM, I set my phone by the bed with wifi off at 2200 with 93% battery. At 0700 I had 88% which is much better than I have ever done. With wifi use, I start the day at 97% at 10am. Its now 530pm and I've used the phone to check email, read some news, etc. I now have 81%. That's much better than I ever got before. I do have dreams of even better battery use though. I'm still a newbie at this stuff so I still am trying different kernels. IntersectRaven's on XDA appears to be the best today :-)
Guest Snarkasm Posted May 3, 2010 Report Posted May 3, 2010 Any performance degradation on the undervolted kernels? I've been considering those. Sounds like you could go two or three days without recharging on that? I do sync my mail (hazard of the job), but it'd be nice to have a little more room on the battery at the end of the day. On eViL's barebones 0.72, I'm down to 90% battery after 9am->2:30pm stretch. It might be nice to get less than that, though...
Guest StuMcBill Posted May 4, 2010 Report Posted May 4, 2010 I didn't think it was possible to use undervolted kernels on the desire yet? If it is, I will be rooting and getting one installed ASAP. I do still want to keep sense UI though. Is these any way me doing this yet? Stu

There are CPU underclocking aps on market for rooted handsets but I haven't tried them. Can't speak for UV kernels persay think you'd need cyanogen. Best to root it and watch this spot while we wait for updates ;-) Root is awesome ;-)
Guest snudel Posted May 5, 2010 Report Posted May 5, 2010 the top battery killer are live wallpapers wifi and 3g are not worth struggleing with them. i have wifi enabled whole day so that it connects at home automatically. 3g is disabled anyway when wifi is connected.
Guest Rdy2Go Posted May 5, 2010 Report Posted May 5, 2010 It's 4 hours since last charge and my battery is at 58%. 3G on but not "always on", exchange email synced each 30 minutes, few sms-es. Life battery sucks all the way. It's been 14 days since I bought the device and I expected things to improve after 1-2 weeks.

I've got my Desire since two days and personally I'm quite satisfied with the battery life compared to my hero, here is my settings and softwares which I ised to use on my hero too: - Power manager (free version) -> default settings are ok - Spare parts -> wifi policy never if plugged & animation and transition set fast - estong task manager -> auto boot - facebook refresh every hour - weather refresh every 3 hours - gps on only if I really need it this below gives a full day with 3h of train with musique and Internet, some SMS and phonecalls and market update via wifi. Edit : FYI HTC Stock rom Edit: FYI HTC stock rom I'm testing Overclock widget since yesterday afternoon - overclock widget (root needed) quick results : I went to my bed around 2am with 22% apply fly mode and woke up around 6.30am with 20% left My desire is currently plugged for charge, I'll give feedback with this config when I'll have to charge it again. Because when checking the advanced Battery History tab (press *#*#4636#*#* on the phone pad) , the only time GPS actually uses the battery is when my Navigation software is fired. Otherwise, GPS shows no battery usage, which led me to the conclusion that ticking the box "Use GPS" under Location in Settings, means "use GPS if an application needs it. otherwise keep it dormant". I've disabled GPS a few days but couldn't tell any difference. What does make a difference is disabling Bluetooth! Made up 25% of my battery usage.

I have the `wifi` and `mobile` widgets on my Orange UK desire (unroote). I usually click on `wifi` when I get home, and that kicks in and the 3g/3g+ etc indicator goes away. But sometimes it doesn't, and I have both wifi and 3g lit up. Is this using 3g? I don't want to burn my allowance when i'm home.

Have you tried "Y5" from the market, this remembers your Wi-Fi and switches off your Wi-Fi when no longer in range, saves having to manually switch on and off (oops just noted you state you are unrooted!) :P
Guest albertz141 Posted May 11, 2010 Report Posted May 11, 2010 i read in many forums that the flickr sync having big impact on battery life and this is well known bug. tried to set mine off - and it did wonders to the battery life (like 2%-3% per night lost instead of 10%+)
