Internet via USB

Hi all,

I am currently in a hotel in Italy. I have data-while-roaming disabled on my Desire. My hotel room has wired LAN internet but no Wifi.

On my Samsung i900 (WinMo), when I connected my phone via USB to my laptop, the LAN connection was shared and I could get internet on my phone.

Is there any way I can do this with my Desire?

If not currently, would it be an option with a rooted phone (I am currently still on my T-Mobile stock rom)?

Thanks in advance to anyone who has the answer....

Hello Ascot17,

You can go to Settings, Wireless & Networks, there is an option called Internet Sharing, you use with your USB cable.

I've tried that with my Desire and it works fine

Cheers.

xhemp, thanks for your reply but that's actually the opposite of what I am trying to do. This internet sharing option allows the laptop to connect via phone's data connection and I have used it successfully at home. What I want to do here is allow the phone to connect via the laptop's data connection....

Oh, ok.

Sorry about that.

Don't have any idea how to do it, if I find something I post here :P

Cheers.

It seems it is not possible (via Bluetooth, I have the same problem)

That was a peculiar MS ActiveSync' feature, not available to Android devices, aided by the networking nature of the link between the computer and the device itself (you could actually see it in the Windows tray area).

Perhaps you want to buy ascot17 a wlan modem/router? I'm sure that'll be appreciated. :D

This is an ol'days story with WinMo users and it's way more cogent now with Markets around: if one doesn't have neither a reliable data plan nor wlan access, that was a safe way to download things directly into the device.

But, years have passed since then and modern devices DO require an adeguate wireless data plan, Android ones the most! So, ascot17: please consider a data plan from your carrier, maybe you can find one at an affordable price, you'll give life to your Android baby!

I feel like people only partialy read the first post.

He said he was in Italy, hence he had to disable data on his phone to avoid the astronomical cost of roaming abroad.

It's not a matter of not having an adequate data plans.

Plus, again he is in a hotel that only provides wired internet connexion, and I can hardly picture anyone carrying around a wireless router when they travel. So again, nothing to to with the OP's problem

On my laptop, there's an intel utility (my wifi) which turns the laptop's wifi into a hotspot. Perhaps something similar exists for you?

I use one of these when travelling abroad http://www.dlink.com/products/?pid=346 great solution to hotels with wired ethernet only, I've had my laptop, ipod touch and my old G1 all connected no problems on hotel ethernet connection.

That of course doesn't help the OP for this time but might be worth considering if you run into this problem often

Thanks for that link! I was hoping that there might be a simple solution to by using a wired connection to my laptop. If there isn't then the mini router might be the best solution. Just need to find one in the UK now at a sensible price....
