Think i need to hard reset - help please!

I need help urgently - SPV has gone mad! when switching the phone on it stays on the smartphone screen for over 10 minutes, then goes to the normal home screen. however, when put in the cradle it starts synchronising and when it gets to to the contacts section it gets to number 1 of 3,198 and hangs permanently - i left it over night and it still doesn't work!!

how do i hard reset please? is the only way i can think to get it back to normal.....
