Guest SmugX Posted April 2, 2003 Report Posted April 2, 2003 Hello all. I've got a problem with ActiveSync, and I'm hoping someone can help me. I've just got myself an SPV (yay!), updated it to the newest standard-Orange firmware, and am running Windows 2000 SP3. Let's assume I've started from scratch - uninstalled my HTC USB Sync device, uninstalled ActiveSync, and rebooted. I then install ActiveSync, plug in my SPV, watch the USB detection, and follow through the wizard to create a partership. Everything works great. Then I unplug the SPV, go for a drink, return and plug it in again. The SPV now always connects as Guest, and won't sync any information. The only way I can get it to connect again is to unplug it, remove the partnership, plug it back in, and go through the wizard once more. But the next time I plug it in, Guest again ... Argh. :x I've trawled around the Microsoft help a little, but had no joy. It suggests soft-resetting my device, which I've done, and it suggests that it may be a Windows permission problem, but I'm always logging in as administrative user, and can't see anything abnormal around the various ActiveSync directories. Can anyone give me any ideas? As I say, I've tried uninstalling ActiveSync and the USB device, but still no joy. Thanks in advance, Neil.
Guest Monolithix [MVP] Posted April 2, 2003 Report Posted April 2, 2003 Moved to Help and Advice. The only few tips i could offer are reinstalling Activesync again and taking a look at this link: http://www.microsoft.com/mobile/pocketpc/s.../activesync.asp if you haven't already. Also check everything is present and correct in Activesync on the SPV. Start > Activesync > Menu > Options...
Guest SmugX Posted April 2, 2003 Report Posted April 2, 2003 Thanks for the help. (And for moving my post to the relevant section - I think I now have permanent "banner syndrome" where I just ignore the first couple of items on any list  ) It ended up recommending booting to safe mode and removing any rogue USB devices, which I haven't tried, and I'll try tomorrow from work. Neil.
Guest SmugX Posted April 9, 2003 Report Posted April 9, 2003 No ... deleted all my USB devices, and reinstalled them, but still no joy. Does anyone have any else bright ideas (except for formatting my PC, which will be pretty darn inconvenient?) (Deleting the partnership and setting it up from scratch each time is a real chore ...) Thanks again, Neil.
Guest Will Posted April 9, 2003 Report Posted April 9, 2003 I have had several comments about this happening (esp on winxp). The following has helped. log off current user, log in as 'Administrator' NOT an account with administrator rights, but the REAL Administrator. Sync and create partnership. Logoff and remove phone. login as your normal username. Will
Guest SmugX Posted April 10, 2003 Report Posted April 10, 2003  Still no joy. (And that sounded like such a great idea, too!) You are correct - I am logging in as an administrative user (in Administrators group etc.), rather than Administrator per se. (BTW, I'm on Windows 2000 SP3 - but hey, XP is pretty much the same thing, different GUI, right?) But the partnerships seem to be established per user - I created the partnership as Administrator, but when I log out and log back in as my regular user, it asks for the partnership to be created again - and then, as per usual, it works once and then connects as Guest subsequently. (The same pattern happens if I try the whole process as Administrator, incidentally, so it doesn't seem to be anything wrong with my user.) I wonder if this is a permissions-thing, though? I have tried configuring my SPV (under the ActiveSync/Connection settings) to log in as a variety of users (completely blank, Guest, my administrative user etc.), but all produce the same work once/Guest after routine. What is everyone else doing? Is everyone logging in as their user, or completely blank? Anyone with any other ideas? Thanks, Neil.
Guest SmugX Posted April 10, 2003 Report Posted April 10, 2003 Actually, a little more update - I've just discovered the ActiveSync log file, and here's its version of what's happening: 2003-04-10 09:36:10 000005C0 - Checking existing partnership on device 0x6ACB004C. 2003-04-10 09:36:10 000007B8 - ActiveSync second instance started, Cmd line: '/onconnect' 2003-04-10 09:36:10 000007B8 - ActiveSync second instance exiting 2003-04-10 09:36:12 00000598 - DTPT: Failed first query to find network. Thanks again, Neil.
Guest SmugX Posted April 16, 2003 Report Posted April 16, 2003 Nope - despite repeated fiddling, I still get the same problem, and am at a dead end. Does anyone have any final suggestions before I format my PC? (which would have been my first bright idea, but unfortunately this is my work PC ... d'oh) Cheers, Neil.
Guest Monolithix [MVP] Posted April 16, 2003 Report Posted April 16, 2003 Would it be less convenient to hard reset your phone first? Or at least try it on another PC. From that log file it looks like either the PC or phone isnt responding when the PC probes for existing partnerships. If that doesnt work you're possibly looking at a format and rerload on your PC...
Guest SmugX Posted April 30, 2003 Report Posted April 30, 2003 Woohoo - finally fixed it! ;) On a whim, I did a search for 0x80004005 (the error from g_app.GetDTPTNetworkType()), and I got lots of people with database connection problems. I pondered, and upgraded to Microsoft Data Access Components MDAC 2.7 SP1 from http://www.microsoft.com/data, and now everything works repeatedly! Cheers, SmugX
