Guest k_bov Posted April 2, 2003 Report Posted April 2, 2003 Hi everyone I have a probem wih my SPV screen. I think it's a problem. It has a sort of rainbow effect to it. Is this normal or is my phone knackered?
Guest Chris b.a.r.f. Posted April 2, 2003 Report Posted April 2, 2003 It's normal, 'specially in cold weather.
Guest Vector Posted April 2, 2003 Report Posted April 2, 2003 This definetly isn't normal, i would ask Orange for a new handset if i were you
Guest Monolithix [MVP] Posted April 2, 2003 Report Posted April 2, 2003 David: just a reminder, fraud ~is~ illegal, and your post could easily confuse. As Chris b.a.r.f says, the rainbow effect is perfectly normal.
Guest Vector Posted April 2, 2003 Report Posted April 2, 2003 Sorry, i didn't see Chris b.a.r.f's post and since i've never experienced this then i thought it was abnormal , promise never to do it again
Guest yatpeak Posted April 4, 2003 Report Posted April 4, 2003 I think it's normal. I have it too, have a look at your SPV's reflection in a glass window with the screen tilted slightly, then you'll see it easily. I heard somewhere that it something to do with it being too tightly packed. Wyatt
Guest abamara Posted April 4, 2003 Report Posted April 4, 2003 Yeah, I have it too and it looks a bit washed out sometimes. But switch it on and it's as if you're looking at a different screen. I wonder why................
Guest yatpeak Posted April 4, 2003 Report Posted April 4, 2003 I think that you can't see the rainbow effect through the light. Wyatt
Guest pisquee Posted April 4, 2003 Report Posted April 4, 2003 Personally, I don' think that it is normal - or, at least it shouldn't be. On my first SPV the screen was fine - no dust getting inside, and no rainbow effect. But this phone was crashing way too much, and so was replaced by Orange Care, with a nice new crashless one, but with rainbow screen that gets dust (and a hair) in it.
Guest madu Posted April 4, 2003 Report Posted April 4, 2003 It is normal!! It is a special plastic window that 'blocks' seeing screen a angles (so nosy ppl can't see what's on screen from the side...). That and the actual TFT have a habbit of going a bit rainbow in certain light (bright sun) and temperatures.. That is totally fine. If the actual picture is buggered and the effect is permanent (it displays incorrectly) than it's a problem and you should let O know..
Guest midnight Posted April 5, 2003 Report Posted April 5, 2003 erm, cool, i didnt know we had a special screen that blocked people from viewing at certain angles hehehehe, thats a new one
Guest casper508 Posted April 5, 2003 Report Posted April 5, 2003 I WANT people to see so should I remove the plastic screen ? Cas
Guest midnight Posted April 5, 2003 Report Posted April 5, 2003 hehehe, if you do i think you'll notice not much difference  it's common for tft screens to not be viewable at certain angles (look at most laptops and pda's) hehe, i really dont know where madukrainian got the idea of a special plastic window from hehe oh, as for the rainbow effect, i've never had it, in bright light it is hard to see the screen, but thats just reflections and the fact that a brighter light is on the screen than the backlight, but it doesnt have a so-called rainbow effect, also, dunno how cold you mean, but i was using it outside during winter months without it doing it. maybe i'm missing something
Guest Chris b.a.r.f. Posted April 5, 2003 Report Posted April 5, 2003 dunno how cold you mean, but i was using it outside during winter months without it doing it. maybe i'm missing something  When I say cold, I mean proper cold like we get here in midwinter; -15 celcius & a windchill that can take it as low as -30 . Then the screen's almost useless....can't remember what the lowest temperature we've had this winter was, but much below 0 degrees and the screen has a marked rainbow-effect.
Guest ajb3000 Posted April 5, 2003 Report Posted April 5, 2003 When I was in Moscow it was around -15C outside and the rainbow effect was very visible, however it didn't really matter because my fingers were too cold to be able to press the buttons hence I couldn't use my phone anyway.
Guest smelliot Posted April 7, 2003 Report Posted April 7, 2003 I also get this rainbow effect. I just randomly notcied it one day, the BIG question on everyones lips id.... can it be reversed? I know it doesn't cause much trouble, but I paid alot for my phone and would like it perfect  Also, I don't know if anyone has noticed this, but I think due to it being a tft screen, at night (almost pitch black) when it is on and the screen is turned off (in screen saver mode) it still emmits a small amount of light, like when a tv is on, but contrast and brighness are turned all the way down.... Am I sad for noticing this? Just I sleep with it right by my bed (got a great little tourch prgram I downloaded) and it's just a little 'characteristic' I noticed with it Smelliot --{If it aint broke, screw with it till it is}--
Guest midnight Posted April 7, 2003 Report Posted April 7, 2003 nope, should be completely black, the backlight is completely off, no power should be going to the screen at all
Guest smelliot Posted April 7, 2003 Report Posted April 7, 2003 oh.... damn. Does that mean there is something wrong with mine? It deffinatly has light emmiting from it, even thought a VERY small amount. It more glows then anything, like all the pixels are charged, after you shine a light on a tv and turn out all the lights. Do you know what I'm on about? :? Smelliot --{Lifes a bitch, then you marry one!}--
Guest midnight Posted April 7, 2003 Report Posted April 7, 2003 errr, you have got the screensaver mode set to 'turn off' havent you? but mine is definitely completely off, no light emitted whatsoever
Guest smelliot Posted April 8, 2003 Report Posted April 8, 2003 Yeah, I have got it on the 'off' setting for the screensaver. It's always done it, it's not just a new thing... so I'm wondering, is my phone a defect? I guess I could live with this little thing  Also, it looks like the weather has a great deal to do with the 'rainbow screen effect' as it's worse today 'cause it's cold.... :? Smelliot --{Sh*t stinks, live with it}--
Guest paulmottley Posted April 9, 2003 Report Posted April 9, 2003 I too have ' the rainbow' on my screen. But I have a complaint: No matter how hard I look or how far I walk , I still can't find that pot of gold!
Guest midnight Posted April 9, 2003 Report Posted April 9, 2003 hehe, i say it now and i'll say it until i get it.... but what rainbow effect?
Guest paulmottley Posted April 9, 2003 Report Posted April 9, 2003 I think it's a glitch in the matrix
Guest paulmottley Posted April 9, 2003 Report Posted April 9, 2003 Gotta go, the wife said there is a Mr Smith at the door to see me.......
Guest mike-oh Posted April 26, 2003 Report Posted April 26, 2003 The rainbow effect i think is something to do with a polarisation effect in the plastic screen rather than a fault with the tft display. When plastics become stressed you can notce the effect under special conditions. We did this with clingfilm and polarised glass in A-level physics. Stretch the clingfilm under polarised glass on an O.H.P and you get the rainbow effect. The reason weather effects it is probably due to the plastic reacting (ie contracting and expanding) to changes in heat thus stressing it. ie when you take it out of a nice warm pocket into the cold the screen contracts (or tries to anyway) thus stressing the plastic. So there you go Any questions class? ;)
