Noob help with custom ROM on HTC hero?

OK, so having had an iphone for a few years I decided to move away from apple and get an HTC Hero running firmware version 1.5.

I am overall very happy with my purchase but having had a browse on the internet it seems that like the iphone these can be unlocked (I beleive it is called rooted?) and custom roms can be installed with 'extra' features and access to other apps in the market.

As someone who 'unlocked' her iphone, this really appeals to me but I am having trouble in finding good information about how to go about this and what is the best rom to install.

I seem to remeber that when I first did the iphone there were 'how to' sections on this site but I can't seem to find anything now, just bits and pieces throughout the threads!

So, I suppose my question is this - is there a 'how to' complete noobs guide to installing a custom rom on my phone and what is the best/newest rom available?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

BTW, not sure if it makes any difference but I am on the vodafone UK network although the phone was bought sim free and should work on any network.
