Questions after flashing MCR 3.2

Hey all,

Yesterday I finally found the time to flash the latest MCR 3.2 release on my HTC Hero, got a few questions:

1. The stock was 2.73 and I did not do a wipe. the phone is fast but I gotta wonder if it could have been faster if I would have wiped it first, or is there no connection between the two?

2. It seems that my internal phone storage has only 21mb left. I flashed the phone wanting to use App2SD as well, and I'm saying loads of information and tutorials on it but it's hard to understand which are relevant and which are old and absolete (at least action-wise).

So right now how do I start using App2SD? do I need to create different directories on my card?

And more importantly, what happens when I switch cards, is there an easy way to duplicate the old card to the new one instead of doing all the work again? cause I'm still with my original 2GB and planning to buy an 8GB card.

Can the low disk space effect performance?

3. Is it ok to have 77Mb memory free after killing with ATK? I'm leaving AnySoftKeyboard, Mail and Clock.

4. Is "Mail" the application that needs to be on in order for ActiveSync auto-sync to work? cause I remember that before flashing, I had my Exchange configuration set to 30 mins but it would just never sync. I just realized yesterday after flashing that it might be because I'm killing "Mail".

5. Just a general knowledge question - after flashing the "People" widget seems a bit different. I'm using the three people layout and it has a big picture which links to using the main action for the person (calling mobile for example) and below that, there the person's name which leads to his card. where is this change coming from? I'm trying to understand what exactly changed in my phone and what didn't - basically I was suprised (this time and the last time which I didn't give a chance to) that my Appearance and installed applications are still the same - after flashing the phone's memory... it's kinda weird.

6. OH GOD WHAT ABOUT VOICE DIALING??? this is seriously driving my crazy. I know that there are hundreds of threads of people saying that it's so easy with a Nokia, without teaching the phone or anything, and works perfectly. yep I'm one of those people. what are the current predictions regarding this feature? available in the 2.1 upgrade? you'll have to excuse me not following these upgrade issues every day, I only have a limited amount of time for phone and modding issues so not really up to speed 100% of the time.

7. Switched numbers with text - I think this was discussed in the small Israel community but I couldn't find a complete answer. what I mean is that in SMS and in Calender, numbers within Hebrew text appear switched. for example "This is the 45 original" will appear as "This is the 54 original". does anyone know about a fix to this issue? obviously I have the Hebrew fonts installed otherwise I wouldn't have seen any Hebrew text.

8. Voice search is kinda not nice. whenever I start the phone's menu and click the Search hard button, it starts Voice Search. now, if I already entered a letter in the search before Voice Search came up, it will only leave me with menu items containing this letter. I couldn't find a way to get out of this situation whereas the menu was stuck showing a current search and I could not edit this search. had to reboot my phone and stay away from the Voice Search app...

9. Sometimes the Event Name does not appear in the Calender widget (the small one) the time do appear. I understand that Hebrew might not always be displayed, but my English-named events seem to be not consistent, didn't really get this issue, it was happening before the upgrade as well.

I think that's it for now, will appreciate any feedback regarding my questions, specifically performance (wiping or not) and storage issues.

Thanks,

Ran

1. You're comming from almost the same ROM. If you'd wiped you'll maybe gain some percent more, but not much.

2. You have to partition your SD card to use with App2SD. Boot into your recovery and partition from there. No swap, 512 Mb or more for ext rest fat. Then go and upgrade from ext2 to ext3, as we have with some small files to do, it will give you some disk performance. Before you do, make sure you have a microSDHC class 4 or better.

When you partition and boot the first time all the apps and cache will automaticly be moved to SD.

3. N/A

4. Mail has to be on (or in background) for sync to work. So don't kill.

5. Improvements from HTC. Maybe a newer version.

6. Andorid 1.5 impossible. You should try a custom 2.1 ROM. SlideVillain or something else then.

7. N/A

8. Voice is much more improved in 2.1 ROMS.

9. N/A
