Radio vs. battery life

I complained a lot about battery life on HTC Desire while others said it wasn't that bad (it can last one day with moderate use) and... I think I know WHY.

These radios drain batery a LOT

radio-32.34.00.28U_4.05.00.30_2-signed.zip

This radio (default!) is the best in terms of battery life

Can I just download the default radio, stick it on my SD card and flash from recovery, over a newer version?

Yes

That's what I did - just select .zip with radio - it's detected as radio, flashed, reboot, no problems...

I find the reception much better on the newer radios. The original from the 405 ROM left me with missed calls at home, and occasionally in my pocket. Not to mention the poor HSDPA reception. Whilst it's still not brilliant, it's a lot better to the point that I now get some HSDPA reception at home, similar to how it was with my Hero (though not as good as some others!).

Think I will just hope that future radio updates bring improved performance in addition to not exclusive from battery preservation :-)

I just want to add a consideration: when I downgraded Radio, on my Desire I had r2 A2SD+ and I had to install again all my apps, since they were corrupted. Anyone else with the same problem?

hmm, not sure :)

but you can see your radio version by using hboot (turn on the phone with vol down pressed)

when the screen with the androids appear, look at the top for version info

Some things I have noticed while running the default radio, The battery life for me seems worse.

Also, when in a 2G area and surfing the internet (using data), I have noticed that it will redirect any incoming calls to my answering machine. I thought it was supposed to suspend the data connecrion, take the incoming call l, and re start the data connection?

Is this true, or does every radio do this?

downgraded to the stock, will report back in a few days.

Never liked the upgrades anyways, 3G was and is crap here so rather go for battery life :)

Also just flashed back to 32.30.00.28U_4.05.00.11 from the 32.37.

But my downloadspeed went down from 916.3 kbits to 245.8 kbits. (Average)

Haven't checked battery life yet. but this is pretty significant for me. Will check how it goes in actual use instead of Speedtest.

(T-mobile Network NL)

Went back to 32.37 and got 940.8 kbit/s woot.

Another test on Battery life if your network allows for is is by setting radio to GSM only through *#*#4636#*#* (1980 internet speed).

If fast internet isn't important to you on the road, this might save some juice.

Maybe someone can explain to me why the Phone was set to WCDMA Prefered in the radio settings?

If i'm in NL on T-Mobile shouldn't it be on GSM Auto (PRL) which got me the best speed BTW 945 kbit/s (i know slight increase)

The roms mentioned are all old radio roms, check http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=687464 for the latest rom, ive got the 16_2 running and i think it;s fine. on average use, 2 days, if i dont do anything but just do a few calls it goes for 3 days. (using setcpu profiles for downclock and juicedefender to turn off apm if screen is off.)

Yup that's the one i'm running now, but my main drain was coming from Motion Task Switcher.
