Upgrading to 2.1 from scratch

I want to test the new 2.1 ROM but am a little unsure where to start.

I'm currently running 1.5 with no Dec update, no root, anything.

Could someone write a step by step guide on here of what people need to do?

Obviously I need to backup my current setup using Nandroid so that needs to be included!

I've read lots of things but some conflict & I think it would be useful to lots of people?!

:)

I too would like exactly the same thing. I have a vague idea of what's required but it would very nice if a kindly knowledgeable person could post a clear step by step guide. Even just a definitive ordered list of the stages required would be very helpful.

How do you perform a nandroid backup?

Install this http://android.modaco.com/content/t-mobile...on-your-device/

And you can skip step 2 from eckengucker1 because the 2.1 image is already rooted and you don't need root to install the recovery image.

Hmm I'm still really worried I'll mess up, what sort of process be if I waited for the official rom, is that process just like installing the December Update?

The offical ROM (if it comes) will no doubt be an easy install, and should be stable. It will also be an alarming shade of pink, and won't have root or apps2sd.

When the stable version is released, hopefully our resident genii will be able to make it more usable and less pink.

First copy the modaco custom rom of your choice (1.7) to the root of your micro sd. Then copy the latest rev of the 2.1 leek to the root too.

This is a guide I wrote for solving boot loops and other problems. It does need rewriting and is a little messy but it should work for this rom

http://android.modaco.com/index.php?s=&amp...t&p=1240044

There is a small how to on how to install the december update at the bottom of the guide. Start there if you hasn't already installed it.

Then follow the guide but:

Stop after completing step 7 then follow this guide:

Perform a nandroid backup (scroll to back up / restore, choose nandroid backup (not ext) then allow it to finnish.) (if it errors proceed no further)

Go back to the home menu and select wipe. Then choose the first (top) option.

Now choose flash from zip and select the 2.1 zip.

Reboot and wait ages (i mean it) for 2.1 to boot.

(i asked you to download one of the 1.7 custom roms so you are able to wipe and install that if you can't restore your backup later on. Best not delete it just yet)

Hope this helps

Hi Bobo, Thanks a lot for your great efforts. :)

I found that after upgrade to the 2.1 R4 Release, my pulse could not automatic correct the date/time through network, and also no vibrate anymore, could I just fall back the boot.img to fix these two bugs ? BTW, I am not using the T-mobile SIM.

Guys - how long is the device supposed to take to reboot after flashing the 2.1 ROM? I have been waiting 20 mins so far and all I get is the pink spinning wheel of death by T-Mobile :-(

Update - have given up after 30 mins - can't install 1.8 ROM - copying files aborted with a chmod error. Retrying 2.1 having removed the SD card as per an earlier instruction. Dreading having to go back to T-Mobile's Dec Update 1.5.2 version..Gutted...

Did you wipe before flashing both these roms?

Just did and I am in. Was reading the original thread where BoBo and Paul started working on the ROM and someone suggested the same (might have been you actually) and now that I have - am in. Just wasted 2 hours being patient :-(

:)

Could have been worse if you weren't.. Your phone could be embedded on a wall of something after a fit of rage ;)

Glad to hear it's working

Am seriously loving this - can't create an APN setting for the O2 SIM I have in it - but this is my spare phone so not a show stopper. Phone seems snappier (maybe the placebo effect) but less annoyed with the responsiveness of the screen and much prefer the fonts and layouts to the cumbersome 1.5 one.

Good on you guys for bringing this out - especially when Huawei promised 2.1 before May and then promptly failed to deliver and have been maintaining radio silence for the past 3 weeks.

Hi Guys

Ive just flashed this rom being very careful to do all the steps listed.

I have flashed the 2.1 rom but all I am getting is the spinning disc with T-mobile written above it. The post says wait for 3-5 mins but its been like 25.

The wipe was done before hand and I was coming from the 1.8 modaco custom rom.

Cheers

When you say you wiped before hand what exactly do you mean?

Now that you have to wipe before flashing the 2.1 rom :) even if you wiped before installing a custom rom.
