Guest clange50 Posted May 13, 2010 Report Posted May 13, 2010 (edited) Edit: Done! For anyone attempting this, I don't know if HDMI is the best way to go. I'll elaborate later. I started out by cutting a multi-adapter I had. 19 cables. Chopper suggested HMDI due to 19 connectors, but as you can see that didn't quite turn out as I had planned.. 5 of the wires were not individually insulated. They relied of some plastic/foil bundling that was impossible to work with. I ended up totally dissecting the entire cable and cutting it in a half to get enough wire. Cost: $19. I could have bought a spool of 30 awg wire for $5. Oh well. Beer break. I guess a good part of the HDMI cable was I reused the woven steel part. You can see red heat shrink under the wire loom, and black heat shrink over that.. Project "Annoying f**king wires" is half way completed. Tested and working! It charges and plays music at the same time. I havent tested the other port, but I don't really care if it works anyway! :) Anyone know of or know how to make just a straight male to female extension cable for the omnias connector? I'm trying to work up a car mount solution with the multi-adapter, but I'd rather have one cable going to the phone instead of the mutli-adapter hanging off of it with two other cables. I have an extra multi-adapter and USB cable.. Edit: I can see the USB cable would not work as an extension, it doesn't have nearly as many wire contacts as the multi-adapter. Hmmm. Guest brandogg Posted May 13, 2010 Report Posted May 13, 2010 Sorry I don't have an answer, but I've been looking for the same thing ever since I got my Omnia...it doesn't exist. I'll probably just end up building my own.
Guest chopperthedog Posted May 13, 2010 Report Posted May 13, 2010 Are you handy with a soldering iron? if yes read on. 1.Get a very sharp xacto knife. 2.Slice just through the insulation on the multi adapter being careful not to cut any wires. 3.Reveal wires, if color coded snip and find suitable wire with enough conductors splice and re insulate properly. (if not color coded be very careful to label cut and splice right ones) I shortened the headphone adapter to about 4" but I was able to cut the casing open and shorten the wire and re solder to board and glue case back together. good luck good day.
Guest clange50 Posted May 13, 2010 Report Posted May 13, 2010 Yeah, I think thats what I'm going to do. It'll take a while to splice 20 wires, but I'll get it done. Thanks.
Guest chopperthedog Posted May 13, 2010 Report Posted May 13, 2010 I do remember the wires in the headphone adapter being color coded. hope the same for you. good day.
Guest clange50 Posted May 14, 2010 Report Posted May 14, 2010 Can anyone point me the right direction for wire? These are super super small, like 40 awg? or something, and they need to be insulated..
Guest chopperthedog Posted May 14, 2010 Report Posted May 14, 2010 What was the total number of wires revealed in the dissection? only reason I ask is HDMI has 19. Plus google reveled many 20 conductor wire suppliers. But I'm sure you don't need 500' good day.

Looks like it might be 30 awg (google revealed IDE cables are 30awg and it looks close to that). My room mate was thinking something similar, like an ipod cable, but if it's 30awg may as well buy a spool. Did you find pre-bundled cables of 20? Edit: actually I just snipped it, 19 cables. HDMI might do it. Past the point of no return! Edited May 14, 2010 by clange50
Guest brandogg Posted May 14, 2010 Report Posted May 14, 2010 (edited) You can also buy a bunch of 30awg kynar wire at RadioShack (if your store has it). It's very thin (obviously, 30awg), but it's single stranded, so that's a plus. I would use a soldering iron if I was you, along with some heat-shrink tubing, if you can find some that is very thin. Edit - actually the way I was going to do it was to pop open the outer shell on both ends, then remove and replace each wire. They wouldn't need to all be replaced, only 5 of them, since I'd only be using the 5v charging and stereo lines. Edited May 14, 2010 by brandogg
Guest clange50 Posted May 14, 2010 Report Posted May 14, 2010 Thats a good point, that's all i'm really interested in too.
