Guest PaulW21781 Posted May 14, 2010 Report Posted May 14, 2010 Have you got any source for this? I don't think I need to hava a source to be fair... HTC Hero is being updated to 2.1 from 1.5 (or 1.6, whatever its running now) via an OTA update of sorts for free. Google Android is an open-source GPL-based O/S, so its free to begin with anyways.
Guest oxyum Posted May 14, 2010 Report Posted May 14, 2010 Google Android is an open-source GPL-based O/S, so its free to begin with anyways. GPL? Ha-ha-ha! Most parts of android is licensed under BSD-like and ASF2. The biggest GPL part of android is linux-kernel, but android is not "just linux". So we can't get source code of HTC apps, which is based on stock android apps.
Guest Ale Baba Posted May 15, 2010 Report Posted May 15, 2010 I'd personally be interested in how long it will take to port Desire or Legend to Froyo. Everything one could read about 2.2 speed improvements makes it a fantastic release and there seem to be more good news, e.g. wireless tethering apparently being integrated. I still don't own neither Legend nor Desire (I just can't decide which one to buy) and would favour a vanilla ROM, but Nexus One is not available in my country.
Guest nekromantik Posted May 15, 2010 Report Posted May 15, 2010 now that the kernal is out, I think it should not take too long to port over a N1 ROM so we should it get a few weeks after N1 launch :)
Guest franciswills Posted May 15, 2010 Report Posted May 15, 2010 As has been mentioned, with the kernel having been released, it *should* be doable to put 2.2 on the Desire without HTC *but* whether Sense will work or not is a different matter.

Well if they got Sense working on the N1 then maybe they could get it working on a N1 2.2 ROM on Desire. Even without Sense, I will be happy to loose that till HTC update Desire as 2.2 will include native Apps2SD which hopefully works better then current rooted solution and it will have Flash so can live without Sense for a while.

Sense on N1 was by porting a leaked Desire build. Not aware of a Sense port to N1 2.1 without the desire being a base... unless I've missed something? If so would be great for future Sense additions, but wishful thinking I'm afraid. So long as HTC don't end up doing to the Desire what they did with Hero *sigh* - wouldn't hold my breath though! Thankfully we have Paul - he will keep us tided over :-) Andrew.
Guest EmDzej Posted May 15, 2010 Report Posted May 15, 2010 to be honest... sense ui and htc's apps are piece of crap in my opinion.. so if we have stock 2.2 ported to desire I would be happy! :)

If you hate Sense, then why the hell did you buy a HTC, instead of N1?
Guest EmDzej Posted May 15, 2010 Report Posted May 15, 2010 (edited) Don't want another flame, but just can't understand... If you hate Sense, then why the hell did you buy a HTC, instead of N1? I've explained it on xda afair. I like its design more. I like hardware buttons, and don't like trackball in N1. Desire is prettier :) It's true - sometimes I wonder if I did make right decision - google updates their phone asap, htc - probably due to the sense thing - does not... but the phone is bought ;) Edited May 15, 2010 by EmDzej
Guest Ale Baba Posted May 15, 2010 Report Posted May 15, 2010 If you hate Sense, then why the hell did you buy a HTC, instead of N1? A lot of people I know would have bought an N1 but it's just not available here. I'd prefer a vanilla 2.2 as well by the way.

Oh ya... that's another reason. N1 isn't in official distribution in my country :) and that means trouble in case of any warranty claims. Edited May 15, 2010 by EmDzej
Guest naguz Posted May 15, 2010 Report Posted May 15, 2010 IMO Sense ia quite good. It has some apps that are not very usefull, but it has good, working integration between contacts and facebook, It has a vastly superior Mail app (although searching for mails on server and IMAP_IDLE is lacking there too), and it looks way better than stock. The stuff you don' like, you don't have to use.

Sure - I don't have to use it, and if so I don't need it to waste space in flash mem :)
