Guest mantrac Posted April 4, 2003 Report Posted April 4, 2003 I have now tested the following on three Orange SPVs with the ROM update installed and the error is 100% repeatable on all three. Orange of course know nothing about this and every customer support person I've spoken to, both on 150 and 156 has never touched an SPV with their own hands! If you decertify the SPV using the Orange Developers Site, the GPRS connection works only ONCE PER REBOOT. If I for example go on the web and download a few pages, then disconnect from GPRS, I can never reconnect unless I reboot the phone. The phone gets stuck on Dialling... and after a while simply says: The Network Connection is not available. Of course, I have full signal strength and can make and receive phonecalls without a problem. I have had Orange reset my GPRS connection and send me SIM updates numerous times but to no avail. The fact that the same exact problem occurs on every other SPV I've checked it on (3 devices in total), makes it a serious bug. Because of this for example, one can only send one MMS message per reboot. Once the MMS is sent, it terminates the GPRS connection and the phone will never allow you to reconnect and send one unless you restart. Once you re-lock the phone's certification system, everything is magically restored... Surely, someone else in here must be having the same problem...
Guest fraser Posted April 4, 2003 Report Posted April 4, 2003 I said no, because I had the same problem before Orange made the decert available, as did many others.
Guest RS Posted April 4, 2003 Report Posted April 4, 2003 I intermittently have GPRS more than once per reboot, and I havn't de-certified through the Orange website. Seems to depend more on the wind direction in south peru than anything else.
Guest cyrilthefish Posted April 4, 2003 Report Posted April 4, 2003 i get that sometimes (i haven't done the developer decert, i used the IPSM method) 90% of the time it can be fixed if GPRS gets stuck by: power button -> radio off -> wait 20 seconds -> power button -> radio on doesn't allways work, sometimes it requires a complete reboot to get the radio to switch on!
Guest drblow Posted April 5, 2003 Report Posted April 5, 2003 Mantrac - I have a similar problem with GPRS after the Orange decert. Although, on PIE I can sometimes stay connected to see 3 or 4 pages, but then as you say, stuck on dialling, and it won't do anything unless I reboot. But I can send as many text messages as I like. Any time I speak to Orange they say it's because a few masts in my area are 'degraded'. It must be option no. 3 on their list of answers to questions they have no answer to  I would be very interested to know what comes of your contact with orange. I haven't been in touch with them through the developers site - they should be more use than the helpdesk (who do need help). Please post any more news about this coz the issue has been floating around the forum, and has not yet had any definitive fix.
Guest Firaas Posted April 5, 2003 Report Posted April 5, 2003 Right... I think I may have solved the problem. It seems to be something to do with "WhoCall" - the caller ID app released recently. Do the following: IPSMWindowsStartup Delete "whoCallMgr.exe". Restart the phone. Wohoo! GPRS should now be working! Alternatively, install the latest version from http://www.modaco.com/download.php?id=471
Guest drblow Posted April 5, 2003 Report Posted April 5, 2003 Nice try m8 - but I do not have whocall installed. I did try it, but ditched it a dew weeks ago. My GPRS problem is slightly different to mantrac - mine gets stuck on dialling sometimes, other times it will say unable to find page etc. but I don't really have to reboot every time. If I just leave it alone for an hour it will reconnect, but will only ever give me a few pages at best & then dialling... My GPRS connection has never really been that good anyway, before decert or any tweaking - so I'm not even sure if it is related.

Guest ceb Posted April 6, 2003 Report Posted April 6, 2003 It seems to be something to do with "WhoCall" - the caller ID app released recently. i can say pretty much for sure that it has nothing to do with WhoCall (beta 2.7) i've contacted lots of users in different country (FR, UK, DK, BG, and DE) and all reports good behaviors with GPRS some have the problem with GPRS, wih or without whoCall. I've been personnally experiencing this kind of problem here. i even did a hard reset and my GPRS wasn't working better. The problem solved itself without me doing anything particular (seems like Orange did something) i called Orange but of course no one was aware of the problem...
Guest mantrac Posted April 7, 2003 Report Posted April 7, 2003 Okay... Now, this is ODD!!! I've re-certed my phone and then de-certed it and now everything works fine... My advice to everyone who has problems... Persistence is king! Cert and Decert your phone on and on until it gives up and lets you use its GPRS like a human being should... :?
Guest casper508 Posted April 7, 2003 Report Posted April 7, 2003 The radio on/off does work for me as mentioned by cyrilthefish but I haven't used the Orange Decertification method. Another trick I use is to kill the explorer thread using TaskManager and restarting it. Doesn't make sense but works almost every time. Cas
Guest glynton Posted April 7, 2003 Report Posted April 7, 2003 I am so fed up with the gprs activities with the phone. Strangely, i dont seem to have problems with Messenger, but browsing is terrible... slow and un-predictable. I can have full signal yet it wont connect, or it'll connect, then disconnect after a few pages, then wont reconnect. After reading a few of the above posts... i'd like to know if anyone has tried Orange GPRS on another phone, like P800 or Nokia. This would certainly rule out a problem with the Orange GPRS infrastructure if these phones ran smoothly. Is there anyway of evaluating how fast the GPRS connection is running at when it's connected? One could use this to compare different phones. My previous phone was a T68i on O2 which worked fine. Dont think i ever got disconnected. (Unfortunatley i've sold the phone now) Anyway, just throwing up some ideas. Glynton
Guest wahblow Posted April 9, 2003 Report Posted April 9, 2003 I agree with glynton tought trail. I suspect it is a network issue. I decerted via the website but I had similar problems anyway before hand. My problem is slightly wierd though. I connect first time and the first page loads ok. he problem is when I try to link to another page. What happens is, after the first page loads, GPRS disconnects, it then hangs in 'dialing...' when trying to connect to another page via a link. To solve this issue I changed my GPRS settings to 'Idle disconnect after 10mins' so it doesn't disconnect after each page is loaded.
Guest abamara Posted April 9, 2003 Report Posted April 9, 2003 I decerted using V2 decerter and have similar problems. Have tried the radio off and on, recert and decert, still no gprs. In my case there's absolutely no gprs. The signal's there, it tries dialling and stops there! 'Error unable to place call' So no webpage absolutely. No orange updates, backups and restores, NOTHING! O seem unaware of the problem and have no solution for it. Level 2 tech support changed Primary DNS setting to 158.43.192.1 and Secondary to 158.43.128.1 still no gprs and same unable to place call error. Deleted gprs settings sent new simupdate sms to initiate new settings. Phone off simcard off, phone on still 'unable to place call'. 6 days today without gprs, I'm giving up!
Guest phillipwarduk Posted April 10, 2003 Report Posted April 10, 2003 I to had this problem...Fixed as follows...Worked for me. ! Don't know why ? PROBLEM When setting the Internet Connection (In "Programs", "Settings", "Data Connections") to automatic, the phone - when ON the cradle - will successfully use your PC's Internet Connection (ideal if you have a fast connection), but will fail to connect successfully when OFF the cradle to the GPRS. FIX All of the changes below take place in the Settings > Data Connections control panel. 1) Change the "Internet Connection" spinner to Automatic 2) Menu > Edit Connections 3) Open the Dial-Up Connections (choose edit on the Edit Connections screen) 4) Edit "Orange CSD WAP" and change it so it connects to "WAP Network". Press done twice to get back to the list of connection types. 5) Open the GPRS Connections 6) Edit "Orange WAP" and change it so it connects to "WAP Network". Press done to save the change, then the home key to leave the control panel. Thanks to Neil Emms at Microsoft for the definitive instructions here. You may need to also do this.... 1) On your PC - open ActiveSync. 2) Click Options 3) Click "Rules" and ensure that the Pass-Thru is set to use the Internet
Guest SirGaz Posted April 10, 2003 Report Posted April 10, 2003 Phillipwarduk This is probably not related to the issue being discussed. What you are talking about is a known problem with the phone settings when trying to set it to automatic. The problem outlined initially was that GPRS does connect, but trying to connect a second time without rebooting results in GPRS not working. I too have this problem and it is really beginning to peeve me off. I'm trying to find a new job (not happy with the one I have) and look on the job websites using the SPV - can't use the work internet without having all sorts of alarms being raised. Anyway, I look every day and it is really annoying having to restart the phone each day just to do that. For those interested, I haven't decerted my phone using the on-line method. I think that the problem only started after the update but can't be sure. Like everyone else I have full signal strength and voice calls/sms work fine.
Guest SirGaz Posted April 10, 2003 Report Posted April 10, 2003 Happened again just now. In fact it's every day for me
Guest abamara Posted April 10, 2003 Report Posted April 10, 2003 The unfortunate thing is that I can't connect at all! Starts dialling...... then the small gprs signal starts alternating with the antenna on the signal. Does that several times then comes up with 'Connection error - ERROR Unable to place call ....... OK?' No pages whatever! It's been going on for a week now and O (156) say it'll be up to 10 days b4 their techies can get back to me! Sad state of affairs! They think it might be a network problem! I'm lost without gprs. I'll go and try recerting and decerting again! Seem the only option I have left! :x
Guest drblow Posted April 11, 2003 Report Posted April 11, 2003 I had exactly the same problem as abamara with my first decert using the V2 program. GPRS never worked again! I got a new handset due to another problem, and since doing the Orange decert I have had the dialling... problem alot. However, I have just been away for a few days and once I left Edinburgh (where I live) I found my gprs to be much better - was in N. Ireland where my gprs worked a treat!! Even if I got disconnected it would dial up straight away again! Now that I'm back, it seems slightly better than before, but still unreliable. Would this then give credence to the standard Orange excuse of 'network coverage" ????
Guest fraser Posted April 11, 2003 Report Posted April 11, 2003 I'm agreed with you, drblow. I never have any problems at my office, but at home and just about everywhere else I've tried (at least 30 miles from the office), it rarely works.
Guest Danny Posted April 12, 2003 Report Posted April 12, 2003 I too have no connection at all! ' Unable to place call' BAH! Iv'e tried everything EVERYTHING!
Guest martin Posted April 12, 2003 Report Posted April 12, 2003 I have just setup O2 GPRS WAP on a PAYG sim and had loads of problems. (not blaming Orange this time) I had 2 bars showing and was constantly getting 'page not found' and 'unable to place call'. Although every so often the page WOULD load. I found that small pages internal to the networks home site (i.e a few lines of text) would load, but anything demanding like news pages or access to external sites would fail about 9 out of ten times. I decided to go into town where I had 4 bars and had no problems whatsoever. Everthing connected first time and loaded quickly. I know that above errors can be caused by incorrect phone or network data settings but I now suspect that poor signal can also create these GPRS failures. Just to add to the confusion....
Guest abamara Posted April 14, 2003 Report Posted April 14, 2003 Danny, any change in your gprs status? Mine's still the same!
