Questions about rooting.

First: I'm sorry for the very noobish question.

I'm thinking of rooting my Desire. But I have some questions first.

1. Why Root?

2. Can you tell? (from looking in the apps)

3. Does memory decrease/Increase.

Please answer.

(I'm sorry for making a new topic but no one answered in the other topics)

1. Why Root? - To have access to system files, so you can remove/add apps which may be blocked on your phone. Almost it gives you more control over your phone, for example you can change the clock speed of the processor. Rooting also unlocks you a man card.

2. Can you tell? (from looking in the apps) - Only if you install "root only" apps.

3. Does memory decrease/Increase. - Rooting makes little difference to memory usage. However, after rooting you can install better memory managements tools such as an Apps to SD tool.

I've heard about some "superuser permission" app after root. Is it obligatory or something form the market?

Pretty much, yes.

To be honest, unless for example, the phone is someone elses (in which case, what the hell are you doing with it?), or you're a teen that has over-protective parents who go through your phone every night to see if you've been downloading porn (in which case, what the hell are you doing with them? :)), rooting your phone shouldn't be a problem for "telling" wether it's been rooted or not.

Rooting it in and of itself removes any kind of carrier branding in the phone, and will remove any applications that are added by the carrier (which, most of the time you can reinstall if you want from the carrier's website).

If you are worried about warranty, depending on the bootloader and method in which you root the device, you will most likely be able to flash it back to a stock ROM if you need to take it back to a store for whatever reason. (The only phones I believe that you can't are the Telstra branded Australian Desires due to a recent OTA update to fix GPS lock problems)

The four biggest reasons for rooting your phone are thus:

1: You're able to run advanced applications that give you much deeper control over your phone's functions. (For example, Apps2SD)

2: The Stock device usually runs faster due to the lack of carrier specific applicaitons that may or may not be always running in the background.

3: A stock phone removes any possibility for compatibility errors due to carrier addons when developing, thus turning your phone into the perfect Android development testbed! (basically, if you want to get into android programming, Rooting your phone is almost a must)

4: Customisability! It's now YOUR phone, not your carriers. put in a different network's SIM card, change the entire UI to something you designesd, change the bootscreen, the choise is yours.

Now, there's also that thing about being able to run pirated apps, which is the darker side of rooting.. but to be honest, any app you'd want to pirate probably has a free alternative on the market somewhere anyway! (in other words, don't. lol)

My problem is my dad who just got a Legend. And once in a while he goes in and want's to see my Desire and ask about every app that he doesn't have ;)

Is there a way to hide "Superuser Permissions"?

What do you mean? is your dad like "what's this app? Why do you have it!? You're not supposed to have this, I'm confiscating your phone!" or is it more of a "The heck is this? Teach me what it does, is it useful?"

If it's the first one, you can use Hide It, an app on the market that can hide apps from the list and password protects access to them. (and yes, it even hides itself, lol)

if it's the second, introduce him to the awesomeness of rooting your phone! I'm sure there are lots of helpful people on the Desire forums willing to help both you and your dad. :)

He won't confiscate it. But pretty much number one.

And he knows what rooting is, but he is afraid of it.

Well, you can tell him that it's perfectly safe and totally reversible. as long as you do the right things and follow instructions correctly.

and no, it won't cause the thing to explode. might brick it if you don't follow instructions tho. ;P

but yeah, use that app if you want to hide any apps. though the removal of any carrier specific traits from the phone would probably tip your dad off first. :)

Ok, I will think about it. In Denmark there aren't any carrier apps. I just have to find the name of the app hider.

If it's your phone who cares what your Dad thinks?? Assuming it works it shouldn't matter
