Why can't orange users update the radio?

Hi there,

I'm curious as to why orange users are unable to update to the latest radio firmware.

The latest is 32.36.00.28U_4.06.00.02_2 i believe, and I'm on 32.30.00.28U_4.05.00.11.

1) What are the changes between the two? Is the latest more stable/faster/better battery life etc?

2) Is orange's network fundamentally different or have they just put in some kind of network ID check?

3) Is it possible to patch the latest radio code so it will work with orange?

4) Will I be able to use my phone on another network once my contract is up? Will I have to update it at that point?

5) Most importantly, can I use the stock/custom roms generated here with my out of date radio software? Will it be unstable?

Thanks for any information anyone can offer,

Phil

Hmm OK, where did you get the unlock code from? Was it from orange or somewhere else? I notice today in the news:

http://www.ukpressreleases.co.uk/Unlock-th...or-1650~123.htm

Is that the same kind of unlock code or are we talking about a different one? I don't really want to have to call orange and explain that I've jiggered about with the phone and can they unlock it for me even though it's still on orange. Seems like it could lead to issues with my warranty/insurance.

I used

Cost around £13 i think it was after conversion, got my code in about 15 minutes

I had the same problem (simlock) but solved it by flashing the official generic ROM which put the old radio back on.

Ok thanks blackhorse, I do believe I'll do this once I finally get round to it. No sense being out of date just for the sake of a sim lock code!

hi all, i have an unlocked black desire that was originally locked to orange. it has since been unlocked and i am using it on another australian network. will updating to the latest radio still sim-lock it, as all i've been reading is that the issue only arises when people are still using the orange carrier. thanks

No idea WHY it happens but it does... New Radios should in theory give better signal on WiFi and 3G etc, although sometimes at the expense of battery, it's just a case of try it and see ;). To be honest just get yourself an unlock code - I've found the user 'cellunlockland' - http://myworld.ebay.co.uk/cellunlockland on ebay can do you codes for £8.99. Once you've unlocked the phone you can upgrade / downgrade whatever Radio you like without any hassle, and you don't have to reenter the code every time.

does this simlock thing only apply to orange branded phones? I have a non-branded desire (don't need a goldcard to root) and am on orange UK

"Most" if not all HTC phones come from HTC sim-unlocked. It is down to the network provider when selling the phone as part of a contract bundle as to whether they wish to simlock the handset to their network.

Orange have been simlocking nearly all of their branded handsets for many years now, and if I'm not mistaken, all the other UK networks do the same on their handsets with the exception of the HTC ones (T-Mobile branded HTC's (Vario, etc) are simlocked??(clarification on this please!)).

IMHO, Simlocks should be present on all handsets. It's a blunt way to deter the less intelligent thief when trying to flog a stolen handset, however, the original network supplier should GIVE the unlock codes away for free upon the expiration of the original contract!

Furthermore, OTA upgrades are becoming more commonplace and thus should not impede the users ability to use their handsets... i.e. a radio upgrade should not trigger a simlock situation...

ARGH... my brain is melting...

I thought I'd post my findings here....

I have an unbranded HTC Desire on Orange and I just took the plunge and installed the latest radio... 32.37.00.32U_4.06.00.16_2

I am NOT sim-locked and all is ok ;)

where did you get your handset from?

if it was from orange direct then it would been sim locked, if it was from a 3rd party shop then it will be unlocked.

I have an unlocked desire from carphonewarehouse - but people were still advising me there was a risk of sim-lock. Apparently even those with branded, locked HTC desires are finding they can flash the 32.37.00.32U_4.06.00.16_2 radio WITHOUT sim-locking the phone...

CPW have a rather lovely policy of never selling network locked phones. And they have enough clout these days for orange to want to comply.

But if you buy direct from orange (like me!) it will be locked.
