the point of rooting?

sorry if this sounds like a dumb topic.

I have been a samsung omnia user for the last 2 years and have recently taken my 1st step into android, i will b receiving my htc desire tomorrow! The omnia section on modaco has been one of my most visited sites over the last 2 years, so in anticipation of my new device I decided to look in here. Ive been looking through and theres all this talk about rooting and Im guessing its going to be similar to the flashing of roms etc that i have done many times on my omnia, but I still cant work out exactly what the point or benefits of rooting my device will be. I would be most grateful if someone could tell me what the benefits are.

The main benefit of rooting is... to be able to flash other ROMs.

Then there are the short-lived (presumably soon to be obsoleted by FroYo) options of installing Apps2SD to free up phone memory and wifi tether (which was tenuous at best on the Desire so far, I believe). Other things like screenshot apps, LED flashlight apps, backup/restore apps only run with or run much better with root, and theming is only an option once you've rooted (check Metamorph and the like).

Lots of fun things, not all of them useful, but most of them enjoyable if you like tinkering. Search around here and XDA for more.
