Guest TSCRYPTO Posted April 5, 2003 Report Posted April 5, 2003 I wonder if something has happened here... I had a look in the registry settings for .cab files: HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT/cabfile/Shell/Open/Command And found a value pointing to wceload.exe in the phone's windows directory. I had a look in windows and couldnt see this file. Now... This file might be hidden from view, or somehow it has been deleted or corrupted. I havent been poking around in the Windows directory, but if I am reading the registry value properly, this file should be there. Midnight (or anyone else!)...any thoughts? :? (PS - if anyone can confirm that wceload.exe should be visible in the windows directory, perhaps they could pm/email me - I really dont wanna do a hard reset!)

Guest Vector Posted April 5, 2003 Report Posted April 5, 2003 Where are you trying to install it to :?:
Guest TSCRYPTO Posted April 5, 2003 Report Posted April 5, 2003 Thanks pal - yeah, a hard reset is just an inconvenience, thats all - de-certing the phone is easy enough these days... Its just re-installing all the goodies thats a pain in the ass though... :?
Guest Vector Posted April 5, 2003 Report Posted April 5, 2003 How big is the app you're trying to install ?
Guest TSCRYPTO Posted April 5, 2003 Report Posted April 5, 2003 I have tried the .cabs for both the current smartexplorer and task manager. They aint that big. Its bloody frustrating - I have had no probs whatsoever installing previous versions of these .cab files. :?
Guest Vector Posted April 5, 2003 Report Posted April 5, 2003 How much space is there on the card :?:
Guest awarner [MVP] Posted April 5, 2003 Report Posted April 5, 2003 Check you have not got your SD security switch turned on. Also when you saw refusing to install, what exactly is happening error codes etc?
Guest Vector Posted April 5, 2003 Report Posted April 5, 2003 oh, obviously got enough space then, have you tried installing it to the phone just to see if it works
Guest TSCRYPTO Posted April 5, 2003 Report Posted April 5, 2003 No, nothing like that awarner - indeed when activating the .cab, I dont even reach the stage where I am asked if I want to install it on the phone or the card. I just get that lousy error message. This is very odd - considering that that notthing has been played with on the phone - in short, its just stopped extracting .cabs.
Guest awarner [MVP] Posted April 5, 2003 Report Posted April 5, 2003 OKsorry just remembered, even though I've printed this countless times in the last week  Hopefully you have smart-explorer or all-explorer still on the phone? If so go to IPSMWindowsAppMgrInstall and delete or preferably run the application you find there. You should normally only see the error message after your first failed install.
Guest TSCRYPTO Posted April 5, 2003 Report Posted April 5, 2003 Thanks awarner - however, the Install file is empty.
Guest awarner [MVP] Posted April 5, 2003 Report Posted April 5, 2003 I also forgot to add ( for any new members who read this) that you cannot see the install file via activsync, only the two app listed before. TSCRYPTO sorry but I am at a loss for the moment, as like I said the only time .cab files fail to install is if the phone believes there is already an install taking place (be it a failed one). One last thought, try deleting the Install folder and see if that works. as a new folder will be created the next time a .cab file is executed.
Guest TSCRYPTO Posted April 5, 2003 Report Posted April 5, 2003 Thanks awarner - I tried deleting the Install file and running the cab - no go unfortunately. However, the lame message I have previously received has been replaced by the one stating that the .cab couldnt be installed because it is not digitally signed. Is there anyway that perhaps, my phone has become 'partially re-certified'? :? Other unsigned apps such as notbad or doom still work fine.
Guest awarner [MVP] Posted April 5, 2003 Report Posted April 5, 2003 try doing it again but before re-running the .cab file try a soft reset ie power off then on again. as this will then clear the resedent memory which could be adding to the problem. I've not heard of a partial reset, normally it's all or nothing.
Guest TSCRYPTO Posted April 5, 2003 Report Posted April 5, 2003 Yeah, its weird, eh? The soft-reset and .cab activation just resulted in the original error message: "xxx failed to install on your device" - this is the message I have been getting all day, apart from the 'digitally signed' one mentioned above. I am completely flummoxed! Hard re-set time I think.
Guest TSCRYPTO Posted April 5, 2003 Report Posted April 5, 2003 Is this of any help? Activating the .cab file itself: Message: xxx.cab failed to install on your device. Activating the .cab file via a shortcut to it: Message: Installation failed. The program or setting cannot be installed because it is not digitally signed with a trusted certificate etc... ???
Guest awarner [MVP] Posted April 5, 2003 Report Posted April 5, 2003 I hate to say it but you may be right, Before you hard reset backup all or part of your IPSMWindowsStart Menu folder to your SD card as this will save you time copying shortcuts of apps that did not need installing. Hard reset always the last option. but unless someone else has any more ideas it looks like that is your only option.
Guest TSCRYPTO Posted April 5, 2003 Report Posted April 5, 2003 Yeah - will do the hard-reset tonight, I think. Cheers.
Guest awarner [MVP] Posted April 5, 2003 Report Posted April 5, 2003 It does sound like the last app you installed failed install has corrupted the phone's registery but not enough to convert your phone back to a certified state.
Guest TSCRYPTO Posted April 5, 2003 Report Posted April 5, 2003 I think you might be right there, awarner. Thanks for your help, nonetheless. Cheers
