Guest Ste Posted April 5, 2003 Report Posted April 5, 2003 I received a phone call from Nationwide Mobiles telling me that as far as their records go I have had my phone (SPV) for over 12 months that I am entitled to a free upgrade. I know the SPV hasn't been out a year so i can't understand it. I told me mate about it though and he said that it happened to his dad before and his dad got a free phone out of it. Has anyone else received this phone call or of a similar nature?
Guest midnight Posted April 5, 2003 Report Posted April 5, 2003 dont complain, just get a nice new free SPVx when released  if they make the mistake that aint your problem hehe
Guest Ste Posted April 5, 2003 Report Posted April 5, 2003 any ideas when the SPVx will be coming out?
Guest muude Posted April 5, 2003 Report Posted April 5, 2003 Did you get this call this call last tuesday?
Guest Ste Posted April 5, 2003 Report Posted April 5, 2003 I got the phone call Wednesday (day after April Fool's). Why you wanting to know that?
Guest martin Posted April 5, 2003 Report Posted April 5, 2003 Its always good to upgrade and its worth money if you intend to stay with the same network for another year. Its called an upgrade but you keep your old phone and you are entitled to buy another one at the subsidised price (with another years contract). Some phones can be free. This will give you a spare workable phone which can come in very handy. Remember that you can upgrade your phone direct with network provider too. It's also a good time to check those tarrifs as this can be changed at the same time with a new contract. Have a good look around and decide wisely. Try not to get ripped off with any expensive deals.
Guest midnight Posted April 5, 2003 Report Posted April 5, 2003 orange have said they will be releasing the spv e100 (spvx) this month, other sites claim otherwise, but i think o will wanna get it out quick before t-mobile release their version of the phone.
Guest Gorskar Posted April 5, 2003 Report Posted April 5, 2003 I heard that they weren't going to release it in the UK and France until theu have shifted their stocks of the existing SPV, which at currrent rate wont be until September or so, by which time they might just skip it and start selling the next in the lineup with Smartphone2003 and bluetooth. There is a link to the article somewhere about, but I can't be bothered to search for it.
Guest mcwarre Posted April 5, 2003 Report Posted April 5, 2003 Ste, They don't seem to have the SPV on their website. I take it you bought it from them? If so I would ask them to confirm it and that there will be no upgrade fee from them or O (in writing). Then buy it, de-cert it, network unlock it and flog it on eBay. Should make about £200-£250, so a nice little profit.
Guest Ste Posted April 5, 2003 Report Posted April 5, 2003 thats what is strange about it. i didn't buy it from them - I got it from my mate who works for Orange. Thats were it bugs me. Oh well I will just have to ring them and find out. Hopefully a new SPV or SPVx could be coming my way for a very cheap (if any) price. I will let you guys know what happens.
Guest FragMeister Posted April 6, 2003 Report Posted April 6, 2003 I am often getting similar calls. The most recent one was from O2 last week (who probably got my number through me using them for sending free SMS via their website). When I said that I have got an SPV in December, and signed up for a new 12 months, they went quiet. I think that many of these companies are trying it on with the hard sell to try and get people upgrading by "bringing it to them" whereas people wouldnt necessarily go to the shops if they are happy with their current handset.
Guest xanadu Posted April 6, 2003 Report Posted April 6, 2003 I have had these sales calls claiming they are calling on behalf of Orange. They are nothing to do with Orange and are talking absolute crap, and these people have no right to be calling people out of the blue. These calls are as bad as doorstep callers and double glazing sales people. Best to Ignore these calls.
Guest solo Posted April 7, 2003 Report Posted April 7, 2003 I have had the same calls. How did they get my number? I have complained to O under the threat of the Data protection act, and they didn't want to know ...
Guest Beardyboy Posted April 7, 2003 Report Posted April 7, 2003 Yeah, I had a similar phone call from O2 last week. I kept the bugger talking for about 20 minutes without answering any of his questions. In the end he basically hung up on me without getting any information about my mobile out of me.
Guest solo Posted April 7, 2003 Report Posted April 7, 2003 These companies have no right to cold call. If you want to stop it happening again it is important that you trace how they obtained your number. In my case I bought directly from O and have not quoted my number anywhere. Therefore there are only two ways in which this company could have got my number: 1) They guessed  2) O gave it to them  If it is 1) then lucky them - they said they won't contact me again, but if it is 2) then O are in breach of the Data Protection act and thus something can be done about it. The big problem is finding out whether it is 1) or 2) :? If they do call again, probe them and see if you can get them to tell you where they got your details from - good luck
Guest superkingdave Posted April 8, 2003 Report Posted April 8, 2003 i have had at least ten calls from orange since i upgraded in december saying that since id had my phone for more than twelve months would i like to upgrade? each time i tell them my situation they say they will change my details on the computer but next week they phone up again. also im sure its the same person some of the time!
Guest Paul [MVP] Posted April 10, 2003 Report Posted April 10, 2003 Damn, I just got it, altho I upgraded in November. This is really unacceptable... They told me they bought the information from Orange! P
