Should I buy a Pulse?

Due to various reasons I cannot get a contract mobile. I really want an Android phone and I have been very tempted by the T-Mobile Pulse. Unfortunate this has been discontinued from stores and is only available online. The replacement is the Pulse Mini and I think it looks crap, too small and the screen is quite dim. But it's running Android 2.1, which I would like.

I like the Pulse. It looks lovely, has a nice screen and is capacitive. But from reading the forums it seems that the current homebrew 2.1 roms are full of bugs with no obvious fixes, to my knowledge. It puts me off a little as I don't want to buy a phone only to be stuck on 1.5 forever.

The only app that 2.1 provides that I would like is Google Maps navigation. Is there an alternative that I could use on 1.5?

Is it worth me buying the pulse and using 1.5 until such time a stable 2.1 rom is released?

I'd say for the price it's worth it.

If you're going for a contract get something by HTC.

There's quite a few different sat nav apps for Android, the most popular seems to be CoPilot Live which is easy to get. Just make sure to download the maps to the device, can chomp its way through data on long journeys!

At the moment, I'm not sure if I would recommend a Pulse... My USB port has just broken, which is a problem a lot of owners have and it seems T-Mobile ain't too keen on repairing it. Other than that, the Pulse is an absolutely fantastic budget handset. 2.1 so far seems fairly stable with r6.1 from BigBear an Paul, but since r6.1 my phone has started randomly restarting up to 20 times a day for no apparent reason. Also of course, no vibrate. Not a big deal for me, but important for most people I'm sure!

1.5 is fine, tbh I'm not sure what all the fuss is about 2.1! The 2.1 release we have now is a T-Mobile branded ROM, so they must be developing it meaning it'll be released for real, one day... Unless T-Mob are pissed about us getting it early! :)

Overall, if you're willing to risk a broken USB port and either having a tough time getting it repaired, or soldering a new socket on yourself (£4 on eBay) or having someone else fix it for £25, the Pulse is well worth getting. I know I said I'm not sure about it above, but in general its a damn good phone ;)

The pulse will get 2.1

Even if they go bankrupt I'm sure a dev will put done more effort into getting us a working 2.1 rom (bobo and paul only stopped working on it as they are expecting the final release any day now)

But the pulse mini isn't a bad phone. Turn the brightness up and it's fine.. Screen is a little on the small side but the extra ram means you can actually multitask. (pulse never seems to be able to run more than one wanted app at a time. Switching to the music app to skip a song while browsing closes the browser..)

Thanks guys. Pulse it is then :)

Now I'll just have to wait until Tuesday to buy one.

Resistive

It isn't. If it were resistive, you would be able to use a stylus, and would have to press down on the screen.

Try just resting your finger on your pulse, no pressure at all, and it will recognise it. It has a capacitive screen.

Eventually the Pulse will get its 2.1 update, it's just a matter of time really.

Ah yes, I see now. Silly me, and you are, of course, correct.

Good to see you've decided on a Pulse. Don't forget Quidco!

Thanks. I'm looking forward to getting one and hoping we eventually get a working 2.1 or 2.2 rom.

Definitely get one. The Pulse is by far the best phone i've ever had. Get it unlocked via the link from this forum, root it and stick a custom rom on and you're sorted

As for 2.1 - it will be released at somepoint.Maybe even 2.2.
