You can do mobile hot spot but you can create a ad hoc wifi tether using Barncle WiFi tether (needs root access)

It crashes when I try to connect my laptop to the adhoc hotspot. I am using MCR 1.7.

I have just gone back to Vanila 1.5 as I have just won a HTC Hero on ebay and will let you know.
