Emergency Charger/battery recommendations?

I need something to give my Hero a boost when I'm away from a wall socket for a couple of days. I've tried one of these:

but all it seems to do is keep the battery at the same state for 30 mins then run out of juice. It also drains the batteries when not in use.

Ideally I want something I can plug in when the battery is at 30% and it'll take me back up to 100%. Any recommendations?

Alternatively, I've looked at the extended batteries, but I seem to remember that they interfere with GPS performance. Can anyone confirm, or recommend one?

Oh, and if the above wasn't enough... as cheap as possible!!

I like the idea of Solar, but I'm not always somewhere with access to the sun!

Have you tried the AA chargers? I'm slightly sceptical about them charging the Hero given my experience with the Nexus.
